Ok, which variegate would you recommend??

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

SUAVEOLENS ‘VARIEGATA’ or 'Peaches and Cream?' I think I've got to have one of these....lol......tell me which one to order! And, EASY to get blooming is a nice qualifier....;-)

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I would choose suaveolens over P&C. Peaches & Cream is kinda wimpy and rarely flowers. suaveolens has a much prettier variegation.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I love Maya! Can you get that one? The suav has white flowers on the smallish side. Later I will look for my picture I took a couple of weeks ago of it. I had my husband dig it out last weekend or I would send you a piece. I found the flowers very cute but nothing to write home about compared to the full size Maya ones.

Maya is a green blue, I love it.

Also there is a new one, Miner's Claim which might be the prettiest variegation yet. Lots of cream colored patches. But I thihk it is very hard to find right now unless you live in California.

P & C has a bad reputation but some on here rave about it. I think there may be a lot of confusion about which is which between Maya and Peaches & Cream. Mine was bought as P & C but I was told here it was Maya. Who knows? LOL.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Kell - thats the first time I'd heard that about your Maya that we're trialing. You know I've been saying I couldn't really tell the difference between the Maya I got from you and what I "bought" from valleygrow as Peaches and Cream.

I've even received dmail that I didn't have PC because the blooms didn't hang straight down.
As you know, I'm a big fan of PC(?). It's been the earliest and fastest to repeat bloom for me.

I do have the variegated suave and while it variegation is different and it has the rippled leaves, it hasn't been been close to the vigor of the Mayas and PC. It was also one of the ones in the hoop house that the spider mites were attracted to. PC was right there by the suavs that were attacked the worst and it never had a problem one. Then there's the 2 maya cuttings from you in March to multi trunked, blooming plants (1 in ground, 1 in a pot) in 5 months.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I wonder if it is P & C, Blaine. I see them here all the time in nurseries and they are all labeled P&C, never Maya. They grow great too. Healthy and bug free. The only thing that seems to bother them are catepillars and they will strip it overnight. I was adamently told it was Maya by the resident experts at the time because it was so free growing and huge. I believe that was the only criteria they used in their determination but I could be wrong.

It suckers all the time. I wonder if anyone has crossed them to see if they pod. The leaves look so identical to me via pictures.

I too would have mites on the suav., personally I didn't like that one all that much. Not a very entertaining brug!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I feel the same about the suav. Mine may be thinking about eeking out another bloom or 2 but it won't see another season here.

So if they were the same plant albeit from different sources, they wouldn't pod? Hmm, might be worth a try.

I've been cutting off all the suckers from the PC(?) so far and sharing them. Now it's thrown up a solid green! Do you think the blooms would change as well?

mk - I've also got Snowbank with much better variegation but doesn't like as much sun. Like PC and Maya it's been pretty much ignored by any bugs. I only got it in may via mailorder so I may not get to see it bloom.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, cross them. If they are the same plant, they won't pod. You need to a few and do another cross to make sure it is in the podding mood.

I got a solid green one too. LOL, the wrong way!! I think Kristi got one too and named it. It was big and fat one. I think (and could be very wrong), the flower was the same.

Mine at times has so many shades to the leaf, then it seems to get so it is just on color at the borders. I think you may be right about the sun. I will watch! I have 3 of them.

Yes, I have given away so many of her too, I sure hope I didn't do it under the wrong name. LOL

Because they look like that we could probably list it as 'BoogerSnot' on ebay and sell all you had!

Hey MKJ.. maybe we could hook you up with a stellar plant, field tested from coast to coast and Hawaii with consistent foliage, insect resistance and flower power. It's a new release called "BoogerSnot". Let me know friend, and for you only I'll give rooted cutting free of charge. Just don't tell anyone.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Oh me me, how can I resist one named BoogerSnot?!! Grandson would love it too!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gross m eout Blaine! LOL. Anyway, "they" say you can tell by how the flower hangs................

Sue no way you have a grandson....you look so young!!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I tell ya, it's the red haircolor, applied monthly. If you decide to show up at Navalet's, I am the one with the wild fake red hair and the grey roots.
Connor is 6 1/2 and granddaughter Natalie 17 mo. I started young and so did my daughter.

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

I didn't/don't like much of anything about the little var.suav, so I gave one away, and let the other freeze. But it's slowly coming back from the roots. I'll let it, unless it gets in the way.

I'm not sure if I'm the Kristi that Kell is talking about since Datdog is also Kristi (that's why I always refer to myself as Kristi K on forums) but the p&c sport that this Kristi named (Axelrose) is a variegated two toned, not solid, green. As well and quickly as it grows, it could have been a Maya, not p&c, that threw it? Confusing...
I bought a p&c from an online nursery, and got my Maya in a trade. The only difference I can state thus far is that Maya roots easily for me, while I have terrible luck with the P&C, although it did return from the roots this spring, thank goodness! I lost all but 2 small cuttings over the winter, one of which I had already promised to someone!

I tried to track down the origins, but it seems it sprang fully formed from the head of someone at Logee's, with no parent plant named (?) and Maya is a sport of KBS.
Maybe they are the same, or, just speculating here, could it be different, but less vigorous KBS sport?

As to solid green sports I have a burning question; If Maya throws a solid green sport, is that sport KBS again? Reversion, or true sport?

Back to the true topic, I'd take P&C of the two mkJones asks about, but I really Love the bright variegation on Miners claim. As a sport of Frosty, it should be a good vigorous grower too.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Plus MC has the pink flowers!
I was thinking about it but only commented on the ones I had first hand experience with. I'm going to let that PC(?) green sucker grow and see what happens.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Kristi K, she's talking about Datdog Kristi. She had a very vigorous solid green sport that she posted. I'm thinking that it must have been winter before last, it doesn't seem like it was last winter.

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

Thanks Ronna. Datdog are you here? What came of it? Did it throw any sports of it's own? I've heard that sports are quicker to throw sports? I just love variegates!! They are so confusing to play with!!!

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

BoogerSnot??! Yuck! Besides, I think I have that one already........he's almost three, and a solid little blonde. ;-)

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

I would choose the suav.....if that is the same as Miners Claim...I think she is really a beauty!
Here with first blooms a few weeks ago....

Oh, Wow.........yup, I think I'm going w/the Suav.; I like the clean white it seems to have. I'm going to wait for my first bloom off my Peach Versicolor though, to decide if I want the 8" or 12" offered at the greenhouse!!

=)

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

Because of the cost to the nursery, and the license needed to sell it, I'm very sure they would have marked it Miners Claim if that's what they were selling. It's the only pink variegated brug on the market for now.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

All this talk of blooms... I need to know about scent ;)
Id love a variegated with a mild ever so mild scent.
I have asthma and cant do the strong scents. ;)

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

She is beautiful Margie, so feminine and flirty, I love her!! I hear she would not like my heat/humidity, wouldn't you know, lol...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

I don't care for really strong scents and I believe that this one had a mildish scent, malestrom

Thank you mk and Sherry!
