This year's new plants.

Victoria,, BC(Zone 8b)

This is Mirabilis jalapa with a variagated flower that I grew from seed. You have to get used to this plant blooming when the sun is NOT shining on it !

Another new one this year is Tigridia, unfortunately the flowers only last a day.

Fascinating flowers, Heather. I love the Mirabilis jalapa. I have never heard of a plant that blooms without he sun. So I guess then, that if you have a shady spot, that little gem is the answer! :)

Very cool flowers Heather!

Heather:

What lovely exotic looking flowers. Do you think they would grow in Ontario?

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Heather
Very interesting- will they be perenial? The varigation on both stands out so nicely! They are certainly very unique were they difficult to start?

Is your Mirabilis jalapa fragrant? Really pretty flowers. I suspect that we might be able to grow it as an annual in Ottawa, but I doubt it would survive the winter. The Tigridia is also fascinating. Thanks for the pictures.

Heather, luv the variegated colors. Another name for the Mirabilis jalapa is Four O'Clocks because they tend to open up later in the day. They do have a tuber like a dahlia that you dig up and store until next year. I have one that blooms pink, red and I think yellow. I do have seeds for the variegated one but didn't plant them this year. This year the buds were just about to open up and they only thing that snapped from my plants during the big storm we had a few weeks ago were my Mirabilis jalapa.

Did you start the Tigridia from seeds? They are also a neat looking flower.

Wow, they're both really cool plants Heather. They're very different and exotic looking. It's too bad that the Tigridia flowers only last a day. I bought a Passiflora 'Lavender Lady' and am a bit disappointed that those flowers only last a day too.

I grew the Mirabilis from seed and they were very easy. They are supposed to be fragrant but it is a scent that I can't smell (I also can't smell freesia, can you believe it !) I also noticed I have some unvariagated ones that have come back from last year. The Tigridia is a small bulb.
By the way Sandy, the passiflora seedling that you gave me is doing great.
Would it be passiflora edulis ?

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Yes Heather, I think the passiflora is P. edulis. Is it a monster? I put 2 in a pot and I've had to cut them back a couple of times because they have huge tendrils that grab onto everything. I have them in the solarium.

Lovely flowers Heather. I've not grown the Mirabilis but last year I grew the Tigridia and loved the flowers but, like you, wished the blooms lasted longer.
