Does it set extra bulbs like the common red one?

Absolutely stunning!

As far as I know it should set extra bulbs. This is my 1st yr with this one and dont know a whole lot about it. Bought the bulb on E-Bay for $8. Had been noticing that in the major bulb catalogs that handle this amaryllis...they are fairly expensive and was trying to figger out why.

wow $8 is a grea price. last winter I everybody was selling for $17! GFY, Jim

I picked up one on Ebay as well but it has failed to bloom. I wonder if it was properly characterized.

Yes that is definitely an expensive one to buy. I've seen them here in Canada in online catalogue ordering for around $20 to $30. Now that's expensive.

Andidandi......... I actually bought 2 of the bulbs. But the other one is still sitting very dormant in its pot. Which I believe would be correct for this bulb based on where its from and how it was probably handled enroute. For the life of me, I don't know why the one bulb bloomed. It should be dormant also or at least just building up its food strengths, So I would bet yours blooms down the road when its ready to show and is comfortable with its environment. This is just my opinion with no guarantee or warranty expressed or implied haha

yep. i agree. Grenthumber is the pix you posted of your plant? that is really something. My new amaryllis bulbs only give me 1 flower that first time they bloom.

Lecanto, FL(Zone 9b)

Vossner.......The pic in question is one I have in my files. Mine, like yours, only gave me 1 bloom and it was marginal to say the least. It will be much better next time around. I think that since the bulb was out of sync with things, it just gave a token effort to bloom instead of sleeping til it was time to sprout.

i agree. but I had to ask. I was gonna be super envious if that thing bloomed for you that way from the very start!

Glad to hear others here have had luck with this bulb. It hasn't bloomed and does not look very enthusiastic, but I have not given up on it.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I can see why it was 8 bucks and up! GOtta get me some of that!

Montreal, QC(Zone 4b)

I have one,too and it took what seemed like for ever to put up leaves. I'll let you know how mine does and if it ever blooms. I hope it at least lives...lol

too cool, grnthmbr. I have amaryllises in all stages of growth but I'm noticing that is general leaves are thriving, this must be a prime time for this particular bulb.

I have this bulb and love it. I bought it at HD for $5.00 two years ago and it has bloomed every year. It is starting to bloom now so when it blooms I will take pictures. And yes they do send of roots of other bulbs. In fact I just split mine. I has about 4 small bulbs. I wish they would bloom too. lol I just wish I had a few to trade. Maybe next year.

wow i better start shopping at HD!! lol I think i bought mine for $15 or so. It has bloomed twice now, this year on christmas day! bloom only lasted a week or two tops though which bummed me out. Its first year it made a substantial new bulb and now i notice two small new ones. I put mine in a beautiful red pot to honor it and at that time gave it fresh compost w/worm castings and it hasn't complained... : ) also called butterfly amaryllis (papillon)

Gorgeous photo! And what fabulous timing for a green & red bloom!!

I have an 'Emerald Butterfly' papilio that I bought last fall... It's had nice green foliage for several months now, but no bloom... I figure/hope it's just a matter of time... perhaps it'll put on a show for me next Christmas!

Mine never bloomed. I may put it outside and hope that it comes around.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I have two. One bloomed the second year and one didn't.
