Kansas rainforest

Wowie! How in the heck do you overwinter everything??? Tell us your secrets!
:) Donna

Twyla
Thanks
Kansas rica!!!! LOL
It ain't hard to overwinter tropicals, bananas under the house, other tropicals cut everything back 1/3 to halfway, water them occassionaly, but mist the heck out of them, keep a fan running 24/7,temps 55* at nite 65* to 70* during the day, secret is just trying to keep them a live to spring!
Plant them and they will grow!!!
That's really cool. Or should I say hot?
Tropicman...hats off to you! Beautiful!
We aren't in Kansas anymore!
Wonderful job!
Ric
I LOVE IT TropicMan...... is that a Castor in the background.... I thought mine were doing well - How tall is it ... and how do you get it that tall....... What's the white bloom in the front...... tell us more secrets...... and when are we having a RU at your place..... ?
Outstanding job. Also wondering abt white plant in front? dixie
Vs,yes castor bean, about 15 ft,composting right where I plant the seeds, and I continue putting my yard waste around it like you would mulch,it decays and provides food for the castor bean.
Swamp lilly,crinum americana,close up here,http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/534986/
Don I am going to have to make it by your place one of these days, it looks georgeous. You say you put your nana under the house, what kind do you have? I mean what kind of a banana do you have?? Let me know when you dig it and I will bring up the ole dodge and we can load it in the back and I will bring it home with me. LOL With your growing ability you could have another growing like that by the end of next summer. All jokes a side, I do really enjoying seeing pictures of your place, please keep them coming.
I took the short cut from Udall to 160 hiway and kept my eyes on the west side of the road and never saw a house that looked like a castle. It has either been torn down or they have done some remodeling and changed the looks of it, or I didn't really know what I was looking for. Which is very possible.
Linda
That looks great!
Hi Linda, come on by,bring the ole dodge!
Have plenty bananas to give away, plus cuttings of about everything you can imagine.
I have several varieties of bananas,orincco,saba,sweetheart,double mahoi,intierens,cavedish,raja puri.basjoo.
I'll be giving away huge edulis passion vines, and a few others.
Hibiscuses as well.
I asked a guy from work, the house I'm thinking about is south of 160,and is painted gray he thought. He lives in Arkansas city and his wifes family own and operate the greenhouse nursery there.
Thanks Calalily, begining to look like the jungles of the south rio grand area!!!
It's funny, I see your pictures and Roots, Rics and Peggys and think "I could do that" lol. I just have to remember to water, we haven't had a good rain since the hurricane!
Sorry to hear about the lack of rain.
Aren't you in an area that usually gets moderating Gulf winds?
You 'could' have done it when you lived up this way.
For pity sakes you have Sago hedges there.
NOW it's mandatory!!! lol
Ric
I see that a lot of the rain goes to the south of you,and most of the rain you do get comes from the northwest and northeast of you, which seems strange now that your in hurricane season.
But I know the greenthumb follows you no matter whether your in Tennesse or Texas!!!!!
I cannot believe what you all do in areas that are NOT AT ALL tropical. Hat s OFF to you. Your gardens could be next door (and pride of the neighbourhood as well). Gee...I am in awe!
We got rain!!! Yippee, about an inch and a half! We do get moderating winds(sometimes they aren't so moderate) which helps keep the heat and humidity tolerable but it dries everything out.
Ric, I HATE sago palms! I have been tempted to rip out the ones down each side of the driveway! I am working on a hibiscus hedge though.
T-man, that green thumb turned brown for a while down here, I killed so many plants trying to adjust to this climate! I kept them too dry, then too wet, then I starved them, too much sun, too little sun.......whew, I could write a book "A thousand things I learned the hard way"
We as the boomers have or will soon be heading South to retire ........that book would probably sell quite well! lol
Doing any tree ferns yet?
Ric
No, I've seen them and been tempted. I'm resisting so far! I remember the first one I saw, it looked like a bird's nest fern on a trunk. I stopped at a nursery and asked if he knew what it was and he showed me a greenhouse full of them. I ran outta there fast!
Well learning the hard way,is sometimes the best way,you won't forget!!!!
I can take you outside and show you a few dead plants here too!
Sometimes I think it's just the plants time to go like everything else in life.and there was nothing you could have done to make a difference.
