Baby Banana?

Ridgeville, IN(Zone 5a)

This appears to be a baby banana plant coming off the parent plant. It is a Basjoo Musa variety. Should I remove the baby plant and pot up seperately? Or leave it alone? If I remove it, how do I do that? I don't want to kill anything. ;O) Thanks. Jenny zone 5

I was told by a friend of mine to leave it alone until next season when it would be bigger. But I have no idea how to remove it......Jenny

Leave them alone.
They need to get some size and their own root system before they are self sufficient.
The pups are the next generation.
The Mother plant will die after flowering.
Though that won't be a problem unless you can give them year around growing conditions.

Besides Musa just look better in clumps. lol

Jenny I'd start thinking of potting up very soon though.

Hi Ric. Thanks for the info. You said I should think about starting to pot up....you mean for the winter? Mine is container grown already. :o) I was going to try to overwinter in my sunroom. But I've also read you can store them in the basement like you would a canna or gladiolia. Your thoughts? Jenny

I think he means re-pot the whole thing (mama and baby) in a bigger pot. it will give the roots more room to devlope- important for the baby one.
