yellow datura
Wilma
Verrrryy Nice!!. I hope mine look as good!
Ann
Real pretty, Wilma. Is that what mine is going to look like?
echoes
Yes your should look the same as there were seeds I started..
so watch for a bloom and save those seed pods..
Wilma
Thanks Ann
Wilma
I'm watching.
So are you going to bring plant in for the winter or let it croak??? I used to have the white one. Had no idea you could grow other colours. A double yellow. Totally amazing. And other colours?
Hmm....
Inanda - thinking of digging up rows of lilies in back yard and making a cottage garden. Maybe.
inanda
Yes I also have the swirl purple one..
Hmm just might try to save it or take a cutting from it and see if that works..
for sure gathering seeds..
cottage garden in the back sounds great and I am sure I have more stones for you if you need some..
I think it would be so lovely.. go for it..
Wilma
Lovely Wilma. You sent me some Purple and White Datura seeds in the Spring, but I didn't have luck starting them. I will try again this fall, I think, especially after seeing how beautiful yours turned out.
Lovely flower you have there Wilma.
Joan
Very impressive...I must make a point of trying them next year.
One of my favourites Wilma.......the yellow is always so lovely. Ü
I'm growing the double purple (always hoping it will be a triple purple like the first one I grew).
Unfortunately the Datura is an annual. One member south of the border had one datura plant that was variegated. She contacted TerraNova (sp?) and did everything under the sun to save it......it died. :(
Who knows tho...... it's only through trying that people discover that sometimes the impossible is possible. Extremely satisfying especially when you've been told it couldn't be done. ;)
Pam even though they are supposed to be an annual, I have a friend who has kept the giant white going for three years. Just lets it go dormant like it was a brug..
And Wilma, that shade of yellow is beautiful. I have a neighbour who has grown the double yellow for several years and I have never been that impressed as it is very creamy yellow. Yours is beautiful. What source for your seeds?
Wow! That's gorgeous.
How toxic are Daturas?
I've been admiring Daturas in the neighbourhood, but have not tried to grow them because of their toxicity. I have 3 yr-old grand twins and my grand-daughter LOVES to pick flowers (although she is gradually learning that aside from dandelions, she needs to ask permission.)
Is the toxicity enough that one could have adverse effects from picking them and then putting the hands on ones mouth? I want to grow them but if there is any danger to the kids, I'll wait until they are bigger.
Ann
Yep you are right Lynn.....I was going from memory. Whites seem to be the easiest dat to overwinter (tho the other colours seem to be different).
Please dont get confused here. Daturas are grown and take different requirements then brugmansias. Brugs will come back each year but most daturas wont.
i try to take mine( brugs) in to the greenhouse every year. the dats will produce seed and come back from seeds. most daturas dont come back but some do. i have sucessfully over wintered dats( white) in a heated envoirment.
with the brug being so little you might want to over winter it inside. water it when needed but if stalk dies off naturally then dont water till spring. the brugmansia forum has a wonderful array of answers.
dont take cuttings from brugs until they flower. if you do it will take forever for them to flower.
YOU will have plenty of seeds from the daturas once they flower to share with your neighbor.
In this thread Eclipse mentioned he was successfu rooting cuttings but they are very prone to rot. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/392708/
Most of the members however stated that they weren't able to get cuttings to survive.
ViolaAnn they are toxic......I wouldn't grow them when children are still prone to sticking things in their mouths

(or have teenagers that think it would be just the plant to get high on).

That's beautiful Wilma. Maybe I'll have to try some again next year. My neighbour gave me some pale purple dat seeds last year but I couldn't get them to germinate this spring.
Sandy
Viola Ann,
Datura, castor bean plant, oleander are very very poisonous. Not for gardens with the young.
Wilma, didn't mean to hijack your thead. Apologies.
Your yellow is just fab. Can't wait for you to post the purple one. Are you going to post another pic of the yellow one when it is totally open? Are you going to self it or wait for insects?
Inanda
Apologies also for hijacking the thread. They are soooo gorgeous, but I'll wait a few years.
Ann
Love it! Just gotta try my seeds again. Thanks for sharing, Wilma. The seeds as well as the photos! LOL
OFG
you are most welcome
Hope to have seeds of this one to share..
just waiting for the seed pod to form.
Wilma
:D
Are we still going to do the Iris trade, Wilma?
OFG
Yes for sure
will have to get out to Mom's place to get my extra iris. but I will e-mail you private.. I didn't forget about you, as you are very quick in sending out trades.
Wilma
No problem Wilma, we have lots of time. Just wondered if you remembered, that's all. We'll talk later. :)
