For wildlife to feel safe in a birdbath adding a few evergreen plants and a bush or two. Being in San An you hae so many great options! I would add canna, Texas Mountian Laurel, Texas Sage, Mexican Bush Sage, salvias are also great in your part of the state! htop is right there is San An and I am more then sure she would have lots of great ideas for ya - she has helped me a time or two! I would decide what type of birds I wanted to bring in and then plant things specifically for them. Google a search for wild birds or wild bird plants and you'll get lots of hits and info.

I would certainly put a feeder near it tho! But, again, read up first. There are tons of different kinds of birds you can attract, some you'll want, some you might not want. If you read up first you'll find out who you want and how to bring them in. You'll find out how to avoid bringing in those you don't want. Basically, you'll avoid all the problems I've had! LOL

One thing to avoid, for sure, is anything too bushy being too close to the bird bath. It's a place for predators to hide and jump out. Birds don't fly well after they are done bathing. A tree w/ low branches, or any plants, fence, poles or something that will support them should be placed about 3 feet from the bath. THat way the birds can flitter right up to it and finish preening themselves till they are dry w/out having to worry about predators. I have "ditch" lilies planted around my bird bath that has little Goldfinches visit daily. The stems from the flowers are sturdy enough to hold the little birdies and it works great as look out points for them.

Hope that helps! :)
