Kind'a hard to find.
Green on Green
Hope he's eating the bad bugs and not your leaves?
I'd like to know the name of that bug. I caught him eating brug leaves last summer and he can eat alot of leaf in a short time. Saw one this year and sprayed him with Raid.
Linda, I've had those and don't know what they are, but I used already mixed Siven in a water hose. Problem is that I have such a large rambling place, there's no way I can get all of anything. I'd like to know what he is too, and what kind of damage he does. Good luck!!
That is a Katydid.
They make that noise at nighttime that sounds like a a very loud double scratch.
They are very destructive and if you grab them they bite as well.
just a quick squeeze will kill them.
No need for chemicals as they ussualy come solo. ;)
whistle whistle ... pretty green legs! Is he a grasshopper? I desperately need a new monitor. This one gets darker and darker the longer I keep it.
Looks like a katydid...which is kin folk to the cricket lol...

I had one of those last year. I thought it was just so cute until I was told it was evil. Great picture Linda.
LOL Eileen. I always forget about raid. I have heard some people exclusively use raid with success I might add, against everything. That would sure save me a lot of money!
I've always just called them 'hop grassers' (grass hoppers). I know they eat plants, he met my shoe. He was just so green, I almost didn't see him.
lol@ Linda!
eh, she'd be a 'KatyDONE' over here. My swat team of Preying Mantis are getting too big to hide. I've seen a couple of 3 inchers the day or 2.
I released hundreds of mantis babies in April, haven't seen ONE since. I hope there are some out there that I just haven't seen.
Do they travel far? I have released lady bugs before, I hear they immediately travel without even stopping first for a meal.
If I catch any more, they will be 'KatyDiddlysquat '!! I've never seen them eat, so I had hoped (knowing better) that they would be good bugs...
bawaahahahah!!
You're sure a good looking lady Sherry!! I was browsing the 'H's in Merriam Webster and came upon "hoot" and there you were. :)
This was the first year I set out mantis egg cases as well. I had only seen one in the 10 years I'd lived here. I luckily caught one of the cases hatching and got a blurry pic. Guess since they've grown they're getting easier to see. Sugarweed took a pic of one on some chartreuse ipomea last week but I haven't seen the shot yet.
Do the Preying Mantis eat grasshoppers as well????
Linda
lol Blaine!
The only thing not on the mantis menu are lady bugs.
If it can grab it, it's lunch. And yes, if you couldn't tell, I'm a huge fan of the mantis.... including the tattoo on the right shoulder. ;)
Will I have a red rose on my right ankle but I don't have any roses in my garden.
Linda
Blaine where do you get your Preying Mantis? I think I am going to look into them next year. I hate grasshoppers, I think more then I hate snakes.
Linda
Out of a local nursery.
I know you can order them online and had planned on that for a couple of years. Then when DS was here the end of May and we were nursery hopping, there they were. So I took 4 and put them in different places around the yard. (actually more than recommended)
Jump in your truck and drive up if you need roses. You can take all 8 David Austins that are in 22gal tubs home with you. This is their second year and blooming like crazy. I've answered my own question on whether I could overwinter roses in containers here and now I'm ready to try something else

I'm not into roses, I mean growing them. I had one in a flower bed but it didn't do any good. Finally one year it didn't come up again. I don't like the thorns. I love getting roses, but my favorite is yellow.
Thanks for the offer.
Linda
I will check into ordering some Preying Mantis. I do think I have seen them offered somewhere. Maybe it is where I got my scanmask.
