Elephant Ear Taro

Archie, MO(Zone 5b)

I am hoping someone has the elephant ear Black Magic that would be willing to share a pup with me. The only ee I currently have to trade is the common green one that gets big leaves but not real tall.

annac: I purchased some black EE online a month or so ago. It died days after it got here and never came back. If there's anything of interest to you on my trade list, let me know as I'd love to have a black once again (my corms from last year rotted over the winter .... talk about dumb luck! Every other aroid I've owned has been a pleasure ...)

Let me know,

annac- I have some red canna, a hosta, and a water lily. I can look them up and see what I have if you are interested in any one of these. I don't have a lot, just moved and had to leave all my plants behind. I am trying to get my gardens established again.

I have just bought a Black Magic at Builders Discount. A 10" pot that was packed full. Just beautiful!! And for only 3.97! Now what do I do to overwinter it?

In zone 7b .... double check this, alright? But I am rather certain that you could get away with a really nice, thick layer of mulch. Otherwise, dig up the main ("mother") plant after the firts frost as it causes the plant material to soften. Cut off all the way down to about an inch or so from the very bottom of the stem. Wash away all the dirt and remove the longer thin roots. You should be left with either a large bulb or a very deformed looking potato, it really depends on the species and the way he/she grew that year: all the same, that's called a 'corm'.

I label my corms and tuck them in bags of perlite until March or April when I pot them up, set 'em on a heating pad next to a bright, sunny window to await babies glorious emerging from their refreshing (and pampered) slumber. I do this with all of my EE's, caladiums, and cannas. It's sorta cool having big, fat, happy "annuals" around the pond well before Labor Day.
