Hi all,
I think I misjudged this past Spring when I thought the pond needed two or three more waterlilies. I added them and now I think I may have overdone it. I did not realize how much bigger last year's ones would get. I now only have a few square feet of 'space' on the surface - I also have two floating planters. What to do?
I see two practical problems immediately with a surface completely covered with plants. First, it's hard to feed the fish! Second, the skimmer is just about useless if debris cannot float to it. Any other problems? One positive - my water is very clear.
My question is - remove one or two plants entirely or regularly trim the leaves? Anybody do that? Will that cut down on blooming? Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thank you.

Too many waterlilies??
Oh boy...can I relate to your problem :)... First...I culled out a few lilies...then I have down a little regular trimming....yes I think it would affect the energy the plant has to bloom but I guess it would depend on other factors also. It wont kill the lilies to do a little pad pruning.
Divide those puppies up and sell them on ebay! I generally divide mine 2 times a year and get 30-40 babies off them. Large babies at that. I only have 3 different lilies but that is way more than I need for a 8x13x2 foot pond. Just don't let them overtake your pond. Mine got so thick onetime that my fish could barely swim through there. Just divide them up when they start overtaking. Sell them off and make a little side money! Tanarae
Thanks to both of you. I guess I will divide them.

Hey!!! Don't sell eveything!! Some of us would like one but cannot afford to buy them. Would LOVE one myself--any kind. I have only a tub pond right now--thinking of getting a child's wading pool for floaters?!
