What is your favorite brug and why?

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

I am curious as to which brugs people really like and their reasons for liking it. This gives me an idea as to which brugs I might like to add to my collection. This info can also be invaluable to any newbies who are just begining to feed their new found addictions. As for me I am partial to the versicolors. I like the way they tend to have a neat growth pattern almost like an instant tree brug without the training. I also love the pendulant flowers that hang straight down not in a nodding form. So I have to cast my vote for Ecuador Pink and Cypress Gardens. Both have beautiful canopies and lots and lots of blooms.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

So far two of mine that have bloomed are tied for favorite, they are Snow Cone and Isobella, Snow Cone because she is so huge and bright white, very faint in aroma. Isobella because she is a lovely delicat Pink, blooms last a long time and has a great scent.

What ever is blooming well seems to be my favorite at the time. None have my undying love at the moment. I have a seedling from my first year that is a nodding suav hybrid that has just huge white blooms that is my favorite today. She just shines in the garden. I call her Headlight. LOL. Golden Lady is always a beauty.

Last year a brug called Pure Love, one of Susie's was my favorite for the season. She entertained me for days. She was a white that turned gold on the edges, hilighted. I just loved her shape and color. She is finally getting blooming size again, I will see if she captivates me again this year.

Usually aurea types with nodding blooms catch my fancy. Though I sure can't think of one right now that I love. LOL Generally, if I see a neck I kill it.

Remind me to only wear turtleneck sweaters around you!! LOL

In yellows, it would be Gold Traum or Day Break, both clear large and long lasting.
Yellow/Oranges, Afterglow for it's strange glow and intense vanilla fragrance.
Pinks, would still be Butterfly, for color, tendrils, thick blooms, heat resistance. But I love Ecuador too, for profuse blooms.
Near reds would be Ms.Emily, for those incredible curly tendrils
Variegated is Miners claim and Axel Rose because they don't look like any others
White singles, Ambrosia; long tendrils, pure white, heavenly fragrance.
White doubles, creamsickle, heat resistance, huge blooms, but does brown, a negative.
Multi-colored, Nancy's Angels, for the interesting color mix, and continuous blooms.
I think we need more more double yellows and oranges available. I have two of each, and am not yet thrilled with them for one reason and another. The D.oranges don't want to bloom easily, and the D.yellows are distorted more often than not.

Heres a pic of Nancy's Angels, since it hasn't 'gotten around' yet. I'd love to see more mixed colors to choose from too.

So far in my short 18 month Florida brug growing experience x candida pink has been the toughest brug as far as being able to handle full sun. Tuffy, a yellow French/Sommers seedling is another of my favorites. She is the most pest resistant of any brug I've ever grown but she does not like all day full Fl sun in 90+ temps.
I will always love Isabella. She is one of the very first brugs I ever had. She is the Queen of changes. I love that she can look so different from season to season. And she is a healthy grower.
Lots of favorites for different reasons. Glad I don't have to pick just one.

I enjoy L'amour but a lot of my brugs have not bloomed yet so that could change.
Creamsickle is really pretty too. I love the greenish tinge to the flowers.

So far the first brug I ever had - an unknown double white. She was easy to please and put out vibrant flushes of flowers. The smell was intoxicating. I 've got a cutting of her now. Hopefully next year she'll be intoxicating again. Of all my new ones Rosamond and Pink Beauty seem to be the lushest and easiest to keep happy.

My favorite brug is every single one that I don't have. Try imagining me, as a child in a toy store.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I've only been growing brugs for 3 months now and Charles Grimaldi is my favorite. Y'd quickly, a ton of big beautiful blooms, and a wonderful fragrance to got along. This brug reminds me of the energizer bunny--just keeps going and going and going....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Karrie. I used to be like that until I got so many. Now I actually can enjoy a brug on Dave's and not get that brug lust to have it in my garden. I have so many special ones that do not fit in my yard, I need no more!!

I forgot to mention my newest thrill, the best double I have ever seen. I just love the fragrance, shape, size and the color. And it is so entertaining in that it has different colored flowers on at the same time. It is still on its first flush so the jury is still out but it maybe my favorite brug this summer. So far all the flowers have been uniformly fantastic. It is so cool as in temperature looking. Refreshing. I do not even have a nickname for her yet. I wish one would come to mind

LOL xeriscape8321. That is the safest thing to do!

Kell - Oh do I ever know what you mean about first flush. My Creamsickle is getting ready for her 2nd, and it is going to be pretty. The first blush I abused and used for pollinating, but it was small, just 3 or 4 of them. This next one gettng ready just might incline me to take the camera out.

Have any of you had vines start twining on your Brugs? Both of my Whiskers - different places and one in pot, one in ground have attracted the vines. One of them has Honeysuckle wrapped around it and the other has Scarlet Runner Bean giving her a permanent kiss. Should I worry or just let nature play?

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

LOL! Scarlet Runners are going up them? I have them going up my sunflowes and tomatoes. I have a pumpkin vine getting a little too close for comfort to a couple of my brugs.

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

I have morning glory trying to wrap itself around Butterfly. I understand they'll choke them or deprive them of sunlight, so I've always cut them off.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I've been keeping an eye on both of them - nothing is choking yet, and they aren't robbing any sunlight. If I see a choking thing going on, I will just cut the vine and unwrap it. Otherwise, I think it's kinda cute.

I had a tomato plant one year that liked to hug a bee balm. That was really cute. Sometimes I think we have to sit back and look at how mother nature works and be happy.

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

And other times we have to WHACK them to death!!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

ow! not my prized brugs with friends!

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

No! Just the invasive monsters that terrorize our brugs existance. My brugs are pampered and treated like babies. In fact i think they eat better than i do!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

So far I think Creamsickle, Golden Lady and Rosamond - but there are many others that haven't bloomed yet....I know the list will get longer!!!! It's like asking a mother her favorite child...

Crumpler, WV

I would have to say one of my hybrids, Orange King. I would still say this even if it wasn't one of my crosses. The color is an intense orange, the bloom is fairly large with long tendrils. And the fragrance is great too. The only bad thing is, all of my brugs had major dieback from neglect last winter after my mother died. So I am still waiting on it to form a new Y this year. Here is a pic of it from last October.

David,

That is an incredible color David. I love the oranges and yours looks to be the darkest I have seen. You need to nurse that plant back to health. It's a special one. That one would be my favorite if I owned a cutting...hint...hint........LOL ;}
Good luck in getting your "Y" real soon.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

David...that is beautiful. Are the leaves really that deepgreen/purple or is it just the light?

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

David that is a beautiful plant and I love the bloom. I hope she Y's for you real quick. If you should plan on sharing cuttings please let us all know, cause I am sure there are a some of us that would love to have one. Once again she is beautiful, you did a excellent job with the hybridization. Give yourself a big pat on the back.

I would have to say my favorite brug...the one the excited me the most was the one that I grew from seed...that had its first flush a few weeks ago!
Good fragnance too, not over powering strong, but nice...

Looks like she has some more tiny buds...so I should get another bloom!!!

Margie

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Margie, a beauty!! Always love to see your pics of her.

David, yours is so nice and dark. I can't wait to see pictures of her open. Hope she puts on a big flush for you that we all get to enjoy.

David, so sorry to hear about your Mom's passing. I know that is a very hard on the heart and the pain is so deep

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Picturelady that is beautiful! Is it a poppysue seedling?

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

yes, vee...it is poppysue's seedling! I have 3 other of the same cross that haven't bloomed yet.

Do you have some too ?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Margie, that is a beautiful seedling!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Picturelady, I'm trialing 4 OR 5 different cuttings for her. I've seen one flower so far. A Rosamond x Sunset. It loves to flower. A pendant white flower that fades to a mottled pale peach a couple of days before the flower kicks the bucket. Really neat leaves and the most interesting buds. This brug kept me entertained for a couple of months. I'm really looking forward to the flowers of the other poppysue babies.
