Old wood and glass windows

Priest River, ID

We are starting a house out of old windows....After seeing one in an 2002 publication of GARDEN SHED and the same one in a Better Homes and Garden project book, desided to give it a try !!!!! Would love any help or words of wisdom from all of you-----I live in Northern Idaho about 45 miles above Spokane , Washington...All of my windows are in great shape -they are the old storm windows off an old house in Spokane...I plan on using twin wall in the roof !!! This is all being done with green treat in the ground 2.5 feet as the frame AGAIN HELP !!!! SANDY

notmartha what do you use for heat in the winter, I see you are in the same zone as I am. Does the heating bill run very much. Just looking for some ideals. I like your GH. Also another question, how big is it?

its 12X16 and I do not heat it all winter-to much $$$ just to keep the old farm house heated, I start using it about march here in Mich and add a electric heater for the cold nights

Not only do you need toheat it but you have to put vents in on opposite ends for air circulation. My husband built the greenhouse in the picture and installed vents that open and shut automatically at 40 degrees.

I'd highly suggest painting the wood as you go; it will not only look cleaner/brighter and help to reflect light, but also the wood is your weakest link to long term wear. Unpainted, it will absorb moisture faster, which will cause eventual rot and warp. Good luck! A green house is a wonderful place to play!!!

Wow................ all the greenhouses look great. You all have done such a wonderful job with the materials you used. I have been collecting old windows all summer for my greenhouse. I found a 4' x 5' plant window at a salvage building supply, it has the hand crank vented window at the top.
Do you suppose that will work ok for ventilation ? Also I have a 5' x 5' window that has 9 window sections. The three on the bottom open and have window screens. I've never had a greenhouse before and can hardly wait to get it built. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Peggie-----I learned one thing about using windows !!!!! Your green house is built around them.......... My frame is up and I found a really great place to get Poly for the roof.....Once I have a roof I will start working on the old wood windows I have....Some need new putty and some just paint. All of mind are old storm windows from a old 1920's house...I will try and post a pic when I get closer to being finished with what I hope to get done before our snow starts !!!! Sandy
