Here's a shot of the newest Alocasia cuprea leaf.
We've been letting it spend the Summer under the Maples.
Nine months a year it's housed in our Vivarium.

Ric, is A. cuprea harder to grow than "Green Shield"?
oh my, that's gorgeous... are they hard to grow? would they survive in my zone without a greenhouse?
I'm growing both GS AND cuprea in the Vivarium.
They really like the high humidity and even temps there.
So far I'm not seeing any problems w/ them outdoors.
Cuprea is supposed to be hardy to 9a so it may work there.
The problem would be getting it enough humidity.
Oh and NO direct sun. They will fry in a heart beat.
Mine gets maybe 20 minutes at sunup.
They do like high indirect light though.
Ric
Is Cuprea more particular about humidity than GS? I'm having pretty good luck with GS, so really tempted to try Cuprea. What a beauty!
ok Ric where did ya say that was in your yard? lol I love it.
Beautiful ear.
Hi Wu... nice doggie.. nice doggie...
the leaf looks like sparkled copper.. outstanding specimen!
lol You think if I bring the Danes that might be a distraction? lol
Does this type of Alocasia really like acidic soil? Reason I ask is in the plant files, soil ph is listed as slightly acidic to acidic. I also have one on the way from a mail-order nursery so wondering what kind of soil to plant it in.
What a great leaf. Reminds me of horseshoe crabs growing up on the Jersey shore.
WOW!
emilyrasmus,
I have it in 1/2 compost and 1/2 used soil from last year.
I'm not sure of the ph as I've never tested the soil.
One of these days I need to get a ph kit.
Wu would love the Danes mystic.
She could stand under them for shade! lol

That is the most beautiful Alocasia I have ever seen. It just shines on it's own.
When I first glanced at the first picture, it looked like some Alien type skin...you know like they show in the movies. hehe
Donna
Ok Ric,
I finally have to ask where your got your Alocasia cuprea ? I've tried to resist, but keep thinking about it. lol
I just saw the other 2 EE's you just got today and it reminded me to come here and ask you about this one.
Thanks,
Donna

I picked up A. cuprea, "Green Shield" and Monstera stiltepecana, amoung others, at Cloud Jungle.

I do Vivariums and love the plants Harry has.
Most are in 2.5" pots or cuttings but are VERY nicely grown.
I start them in cases and move them out.
It appears to be out of stock at the moment.
Check out the Philodendrons and Remusatia vivipara.
The R.v. I got as a bulb last Fall. It was only about 1" in diameter.
It's now about 24" high.

I just received my A. cuprea from Natural Selections Exotics and I just about fell over when I looked at the large plant they sent me. Make that two plants with over 15 leaves. A few were damaged during shipping so I took those off, but most are in great condition. The pic below is what it looked like only hours out of the packing box. Feast your eyes!
The thud you heard was my jaw hitting the floor!
That is SWEET!
Wait till the new leaves start.............you will not even believe the show.
