Today I worked the WASSO Garden Tour. One of the organizers called me before I was to be there and asked me to stop by to pick up some books. I arrived before she did and while browsing in her garden discovered several pots of brugmansia on her front porch! I was very excited and when she arrived I asked her about them. She was thrilled to talk about them but was amazed to learn that the varieties had names. (Her's was sold as "Pink Brugmansia") I had to get to my spot on the tour so we agreed to meet to talk more at a later date.
Worked my house for two hours(Marking and selling tickets) and then decided to take a stroll about before I left and what do I find? Another brugmansia at this house! A"White brugmansia" buyer who got it from a catalog. The owner was disappointed that it hadn't bloomed yet and I was able to talk to him about Y's and fertilizing etc.. HIs plant looked very happy so I told him that it was possible that it would "y" soon. He promised me a cutting if I wanted it and we also talked about Dave's Garden and he may arrive here one day soon.
I stopped by one other house that was on the tour and... you guessed it.. More Brugmansia!!! She called them Angel trumpets and told me about the purple double she had out front. I told her it was probably a datura and we had a great conversation also..Her Brugs were yellow/orange and she was interested in pink cuttings. I really controlled myself because her brugs looked awful.. she had had them for 4 years so I decided to keep my big yap shut (for once)
The nice thing was I felt I was able to provide some info that these people really wanted to know about their plants and made some new friends. It was nice to find some Brug growers right here in town and it was nice to feel like I knew what I was talking about thanks to this forum and to Monika's book.
Now you will all have to beat me because i didn't take any photos :(
Garden Tour
50 lashes with a wet noodle. LOL And you thought you were the only one! LOL Life is strange, isn't it. I'll be driving down a road I've never been on, and out of the corner of my eye I'll see one. Always gives me a kick.

You know.. I think I was feeling like the only one! I talk about it with my DH and other people and I know they are just humoring me. Although DH does more than humor me as he is my chief digmeister. "Hey Digmeister.. put a garden right here would you?? " (indicating twenty foot long space and then watching him walk away shaking his head)
LOL Laura, our husbands should get together for a gripefest!! What would we do without them???
They must all over winter them inside then in your zone. I see them more and more in magazines. I think they are becominjg so main stream now. Wai ttill they get a look at some of our real fancy ones.
All my friends roll their eyes at me when I go on about my plants. I am always shocked that most people do not even notice plants as they drive along. My favoitre thing is Tom driving somewhere so I can just be on the look out for something hot.
Oh I can just see it Kell.. Us babbling away about the plants and them looking at us and them each other with that knowing little headshake that says.. "They truely are insane you know".
I actually saw a Brug being used in a landscaping show on TV the other day. Of course they called it an angel trumpet and there was no variety name.
Yes I was thinking of taking Monika's book over to share with a couple of the people I talked to yesterday. Show them some of the possibilities. It was kind of funny since they were wanting to swap cuttings and I was thinking.." but, they don't have names"... ( I would take a white and a yellow since I don't have those colors but no unnamed pinks! lol) I have become a brug snob after one bloom...sigh... (course I have a bunch of seeds and and and etc ) But I am willing to share with them!
I have actually gone up to houses to ask what kind of plants they have when I see something that really appeals to me.. yes I look although I do try to drive safely.. I like it best when DH drives and I can scope!
And in my case, Tom is the faster driver so he gets to drive the get away car. LOL
Your new friends will go nuts when they see those brug pictures Laura. Just nuts.
If I ever get caught up I would love to send you a special white if you want a white, I have grown to trial. It is so lovely. I think I may have some cuttings rooting. It is one of my favorite new ones. I am so far behind though in my sending packages. I only sent 4 boxes last week and pooped out. This one has upturned blooms and her tendrils flare back like a rocket. This picture does not capture her charm. She also has such a great scent.
Hi, Jazz and Kell
I have a couple of brugs too. I don't post here much but was checking out the threads. I do know how you feel about the DH not understanding. Mine did put our old pump back in service so now I can use well water on all the plants. He is also great with a tiller.
Last night I went back to the house where I manned the table. The garden tour was for Sat and Sun and was beginning to wind down. The owners gave me a big welcome and insisted I sit down and join them in a drink and we probably talked for at least a half hour before we got on the subject of Brugs. He was thrilled that I brought over the book and I had written out some info about growing them in containers and fertilizing etc and gave him that. Then the lady from the other house showed up and also enjoyed the book.. They were amazed at the variety and colors. It was a lot of fun and we were still going strong three hours later when I finally tore myself away and went home! lol..
Kell.. I would love a white from you. That one is gorgeous.. I love those tendrils!..lol..I have a thing for longer tendrils..Get caught up first! If I lived closer I would come over and help you. But it's a bit of a drive for a day trip..lol We were thinking of coming to visit friends that live in Moreno Valley this month but I think we are going to stay local instead..sigh..
Hey BG.. Welcome!! I shouldn't dog my dear DH because he lets me do what I want in the yard. And assists. I brought large rhododendrons home and told him I wanted to plant them soon and on the appointed day he came up to me with a shovel and said.. Where do you want the holes? Who can ask for more?
Sounds like a lot of fun, Laura. New friends made!!
Your husband sounds like a gem. Mine really is too though I think he may kick and scream a bit more than yours does. LOL
It was fun :)
hmm.. kicking and screaming no.. walking about with a case of the grumps.. definately!! Not sure which one is worse..
