Preparing our Chicken Coop

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Although I grew up with chickens my entire childhood, getting some of my own makes me realize how many questions I have! We recenlty bought a house with a chicken coop that was NOT cleaned after their last batch of chickens. Our chicks will be ready for the house/coop soon, so I'm thinking I'll get it ready for them this week. I prefer not to use pesticides in the hen house. In that case, besides shoveling out all the old stuff really well, does anyone have advice on how I can sanitize it for the new chicks? My parents said they think we used Pine Sol when I was young.

A couple of other random questions: These chicks hatched on July 5th. Any idea when they'll begin to lay eggs? We got two RI Reds, two White Leghorns, and two Ameraucanas. They're all supposed to be hens now. If we get a rooster in the future, does it matter what kind of rooster we get?

Thanks for your help!
