boo hoo...

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

I am so disappointed in my brugs this summer...they just havent been worth the effort...my tropical sunset finally bloomed and its just another ho hum light yellow...

Creamsicle is gorgeous for one day until the blooms turn brown...
Kyles Pink - blooms too little
Whiskers - is one that I am pleased with

anyone want to trade some brug cuttings for daylilies ?

Charlotteda,

I'm so sorry you are disappointed. Please wait until Fall to give them a chance to do better!!! We've had such terrible weather all over the US that they really haven't had a chance to "show out" yet.

Charlotteda,

I know how you feel, my brugs just are not doing what they normally do. The picture you posted is not 'Tropical Sunset' IMHO. Here is a link to Dave's plant files with pics of TS.

And like Judy said, hopefully the weather will start to cool off and the brugs start to bloom better.

I feel the same way about my brugs. I have one now that has a bud that is about 3 inches and a lot of little ones growing. Out of the 20 that I have out, there is about 8 of them that the leaves are drying on and breaking off. Sometimes I think I will just go out and pull them up and toss them. Then the cats are getting their fill of them. I know if I don't get some blooms out of them they won't be returning next spring. I am not lucky enough to have a gh to keep them for the winter, and I'm not doing like I did last winter have 20 or 30 brugs in the house with spider mites. I fought them all last winter. So I am going to be real selective on what I do want to keep for next year. I do know I want to keep my variegated ones, they haven't bloomed or don't even look like they are going to, but I like variegated plants.

Well...I traded for the tropical sunset cuttings with an active member of this forum...I'll have to ask...maybe something got mixed up. :)

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Mine have not done well this summer either. Not blooming as much as I would like but last year they did better in the fall. My Tropical Sunset bloomed June 30

The blooms only last 2 or 3 days, then they're gone

Oh I love to see pictures of tropical sunset,it is so pretty. Dixie

Charlotte - both Tropical Sunsets I ordered bloomed like that as well. Just a pale yellow with no special fragrance. Big whoop! :( Till the last couple of weeks it's just been PC blooming. Then Harlot took a turn followed by Butterfly. But now things are really starting to take off. We're do for another string of 90's and I hope that doesn't stall things again.

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

If I were a newbie to brugs (on the other hand, why would a newbie have 200+ brugs?) I would trash them and plant zinnias about now. Colors are pale, double are weird, most are not blooming or bloom and brown withen a couple of days.
But I know this horrid weather won't last, and the colors will soon glow, and the air will fill with fragrance for nights on end; and I'll again look for and Need each new thing available.
And I'll be glad I waited to replace them with zinnias.

LOL Lagata. Spoken like a true veteran.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Well....I know the weather is a factor and its crummy right now but...I'm more disappointed that this TS doesnt look anything like it should... do you think its incorrect or just being affected by the heat ?

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

in my case I don't think it was the heat. They bloomed like that in the hoop house in the spring and one thats bloomed since, in ground still was just the pale yellow.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Well...if we get a overall agreement that they are just misnamed or just this plain...mine is off to the compost pile !

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I had lost my TS but the other day I found it for it was blooming. But I never went close to look. I will check it out tomorrow and see if it still has blooms. Mine always had a dark rim and was so pretty!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I get discouraged with my brugs. I don't like to see them on there last leg, if you know what I mean. I want them healthy looking blooming like crazy. I talk a mean talk, to tell the truth they will all be where they are right now come Nov. Probably will be begging for new cuttings to start for next year. I do think the ones I have in pots are looking better then the ones in the ground, does anyone else see that with theres. I also know that any that are overwintered will be done in a bubbler. I like the ideal of not having spider mites. Then will pot them up come very early spring. I have the one Tequila Sunrise that has buds on, and if she should happen to bloom I will be just like everyone on here so proud. I don't let anyone near her for fear the bud will drop. I just stop and gaze at it, maybe 50 to 100 times a day, just making sure it is still there, and checking out the other little buds to see how they have grown.

To tell the truth I hate to see flowers that look like they are going to die, especially mine.

I'll be selling plasma next month to pay the water bill which will explain why everything is growing fine. Water then follow up with 2gal blue water on top of it. I think ended up with 29 that keep me fussing. I can't imagine having hundreds of brugs around like the resident gurus have. It'd drive me to drink.. more! (ggg)

My hat's off to all you hardcore collectors and hybridizers!

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

For the most part....my unhappiness is not due to lack of attention...the heat of course....I cant do anything about but mine have had alot of water..I just have had trouble finding ones that I really loved enough to be worth the trouble...had my heart set on this TS and I'm really disappointed that it has no color...many of mine WILL end up on the compost pile...because I feel that they just arent good performers for me...whether its climate or whatever..

I will keep creamsicle in spite of the browning blooms because when she is beautiful...she is awesome.

I'm having the same results with my Tropical Sunset brug Charlotte. This is my first year growing brugs so I didn't realise it doesn't look the way it's supposed to until I read this thread. The first flower on my Tequila Sunrise is just opening today and it looks like it is going to have a band of orange around the bottom edge like it's supposed to.

Here's a picture of Tropical Sunset two weeks ago.

Here's a picture of Tropical Sunset today. It's still just a pale yellow. I would love to have one with the beautiful orange colour in it.

With a little help from another member...I think we have discovered that mine may be mislabeled. I think I have read though that tropical sunset doesnt color up good for everyone.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

nightowl2 when your Tequila Sunrise blooms would you be so kind to post a picture. My Tequila Sunrise has buds on it and I am dying to see what the blooms will look like. I have been babying that plant hoping it doesn't drop it's bud. It does have a lot of tiny buds but only 1 that is about 3 inches long. I go out everyday and check on it.

Thanks Linda

Here is the bud that I am sooooooo proud of on my Tequila Sunset.

Charlotte, do you grow Frosty or First Day? They are both great bloomers for me! I am about to get my second flush on both.

Georgia Peach has been throwing out one at a time but this is the first year for it to bloom. I was gonna pitch Tequilla Sunrise if it didn't bloom soon and it Y'd and has buds. I also have buds on a special cross and several others. I think the big difference for me this year was getting them out into the greenhouse in March. Then we had a nasty cold spell in April. I think they were fooled into taking off. LOL

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

I do have Frosty and she bloomed well last year...I leave her in the ground over winter and it takes a while for blooms every year...I may try to root a piece closer to the Y so it will bloom earlier in the season.

I love my Dr. Seuss and Whiskers for the scent. Just havent found a white that really does it for me yet.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Maybe my Tropical Sunset was mislabeled also. I'll have to ask the person who gave me the cutting how hers bloomed.

Linda, here's a picture of the Tequila Sunrise flower this morning. It's getting warm outside so the flower is already a bit floppy. I'll try to get a better one this evening if I can.

It is so pretty Sandy, I sure hope mine blooms I think I would fall down a just die if my bud dropped. Will maybe not die but I sure would throw a fit. You would probably hear me in Vancouver. Screaming and yelling. LOL

Linda

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Your bud looks good Linda. Do you have a problem with buds dropping off? I've only ever had really tiny ones drop off so I'm sure yours will be fine

Sandy.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

This is my very first brug that I have ever had. Since I got her I have acquired more from some very nice DG'er. I have just read different threads about there bud dropping.

I went out a second ago and looking at my other brugs, and noticed one was needing some water, so I gave it some, then noticed it looked like it was getting some buds. Going to wait a couple of days before I really check her over, then I will reveal which one she is and a picture.

Linda

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

A very generous DG'er has offered to correct my TS problem with another cutting..do any of you have any experience with these...which are best and why ? I do live in SC if that matters :)

I know exactly what it's like Linda. I had my first bud in January on a brug I had in the solarium. I was so excited. When it started to get close to opening I posted a picture of it every day until it finished blooming. I laugh when I think about it now. It's so nice that everyone indulges us. I guess it's because everyone goes through the same thing and has fond memories.

Sandy
