Need help with my first Brugmansia

Mars, PA

After seeing so many wonderful photos of Brugmansia plants in glorious bloom, I purchased my first in the Spring. It is outside in full sun. I give it plenty of water and feed it on a regular basis. It is growing tall, but it is not budding at all. Am I doing something wrong? When should the plant form buds? I sure would love to see some flowers this year. Thanks for any and all help. Liz K.

Hi Liz...and welcome to the wonderful world of brugs !!!

Before the brug can bloom the stem has to form a Y...the branches above the Y are capable of blooming...not the others. It sounds like you are doing everything right so it just might not be ready yet.

Do you have a photo of your brug? Can you see a Y ? The leaves after a Y are different from the leaves before it. They are uneven and don't meet. I will try and locate some photos so you can see what I mean.

I am sure others will come along too and join in !

Good luck and enjoy it! They are a wonderful plant!

Yes! It does have a Y! The two branches that form the topo portion of the "Y" are about 6 inches long. I will keep reading this forum and can't wait to see those lovely flowers.. Thank you both for answering. Liz

If it has a Y then it will not be long before it flowers. It would be a good time to give it an extra dose of liquid fertilizer.

It's blooming! Really blooming! I just love these brugs. I have joined the craze and purchased several more cuttings. Can't wait to see the next one bloom.

Madness, indeed. Well after my one Brug bloomed, I bought a few others. More than a few..not telling how many =+) Now they are all blooming and sooo beautifully. I am hooked. I am also hooked on exotic hibiscus, orchids, passion flowers. Now I just have to figure out how I am going to make room for all of them in my home over the winter, and, the worst part, break it to my DH!
