I believe this is Tecomaria capensis, Cape Honeysuckle and not Firespike. Here is a picture of Cape Honeysuckle http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/4714/.

Hi, jnana --

From your reference, it does look just like the Tecomaria capensis, Cape Honeysuckle. :)

I dug this up from someone's yard this winter and she said it was a cardinal vine. Well, I have been trying to identify it...and was woefully wrong. Thanks for getting it right. And from the PlantFiles link, looks like the flowers will get better! Have you noticed any tendancies the plant has toward being invasive?

Hi Soozer,
I've had this plant for about 3 years and I would not consider it an invasive at all. It is a robust grower and it has tendencies to root wherever a stem touches the ground, but it hasn't gotten away from its original location. It flowers on and off throughout the year. I do have to prune often in order to keep within bounds though.

So good to know the true identity and plan accordingly.
