Sweet Potato Vine in Pond?

Ridgeville, IN(Zone 5a)

I've read over and over that you can use a sweet potato vine as a bog plant and place it right in your pond. Does anyone do this? Any thoughts on this?

And do you have fish in your pond? Do they try to eat it? I've heard it's poisonous, but that fish seem to be smart enough to leave it alone. Your thoughts? Thanks. :) Jenny

Some have actually grown over TO my stream, and took on roots, but we took them out. Just this week, I pruned a purple vine, and tossed the prunings into the waterfall basin so that they would root... I guess I might leave them, but I will watch the roots. If they get crazy, they will have to come out, but I figure I can pot them for inside over the winter.....maybe!

Thanks Mel. And you don't have any trouble with the fish trying to eat it? Jenny

Well, there are no fish in my waterfall basin..... so that doesn't apply, sorry. AND they've only been there 3 days or so!

Beware it will take over, it grows so fast. This is only two plants, but when it found the lower pond, it went wild. I had to keep cutting it back, but as I did, I planted the rooted ones in other beds. As for the fish, I had fantail goldfish in this pond and they never touched it.

Thanks! Nice pic. I dug up my tricolor yesterday and put it in the pond. It's doing good. I have a 2000 gal pond with not much shade cover. So if it takes over......right now that's a good thing for me. :o) I bought more lilies, but I'm trying to think of other plants for shade cover, and the SPV came to mind. Jenny
