is that porcelianberry vine? it looks perfect under the nodding pink blooms.

mine are under my pineapple guava. how would you describe the smell? we've been trying to figure it out.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

No thats red flame grape vine, can't quite determine the fragrance either!
I have varigated porcelion vine, and its blooming again for the second time this summer, and the berries are already turning blue from the first flowering.

Lovely pictures!! Thanks for sharing them. And I'll have to spread it around that there's a thread here called "naked ladies after dark"... perhaps that will entice some more folks over to DG! LOL

I bought about 30 naked lady bulbs this year, planted and waited. and waited. and waited. NOTHING! Dug em up, no rot, cleaned off the hard cover so new growth could sprout, and now only a few are coming up? What am I doing wrong.... these were from growing plants not in a bad in a store, etc. HELP.... I love them and had intended to surround a tree with them.... I have criumns around 2, amaryllis around 2 and dayliies around another..... they Naked Ladies have truly given me a Surprise!

Well they should have been dormant until spring,if you just planted the bulbs, which then only the foliage will appear, and grow, then after about 2 months the foliage should die back, then around first August the flowers will appear,

Bossier City, LA(Zone 8a)

Thanks.... guess I'll just wait and see. I actually planted them in April and I thought they would have at least had foliage. I'll take even a glimpse of green so I know they are not dead..... Anyway, thanks for the advice. I hope my can grow up to look as pretty as yours!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Fall is the best time to plant them, right after they have bloomed, but purchasing in April, and palnting them, remember spring foliage, would have to be next spring, for they need time to get acclamated to the soil, and grow some roots first before they can send up some foliage, and mid summer flowers, some places it woulod be fall flowers.
Sprinkle a little bone meal over them and work in the soil, and they will be fine and flower great next year!

I just planted some magic lily bulbs I got from ebay a few weeks ago. I have one that just sprouted right up. Nothing else was happening with the rest so I was wondering too what was going on. I guess I will sprinkle some bone meal on them for now.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Foliage will come up in spring, and flowers about this time next summer.
Won't be long you'll have them pop up all over looking like these!

Mine are blooming also. Did'nt check till I saw your post. They have been in the ground two years.

Yes they seem to come up from nowhere,in just a day or two, flower, and gone before you know it!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Those are so pretty! Lucky that you can leave them in the ground. I have some that I got when I was down in Florida this year. They still have put out any green leaves....sheesh!

I was wondering in zones 4 or lower,if you could dig a square hole, and line the sides of the hole with 1 inch styafoam panels insulation and backfill and plant your bulbs, then mulch extra,if that would move you up a couple zones.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

It would be worth a shot! What do you mean by backfill?
:) Donna

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Really the word I was looking for was several layers,to give a r rating.like they do with different degrees of insulating levels.
Like a panel ,then dirt, another panel, then plant your bulbs, then a panel, more dirt, then another panel,2 layers of inslation so to speak, the the same on top, then come spring, take away the top levels of insulation,I know it sounds like a lot of work, but no more than what I do every spring and fall,I take all the plants from there pots plant directly in the ground, then come fall dig them back up and repot for the winter.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

It could work, but I think for the rainlilies it would be too much work...lol. I rather just dig them up for the winter.
:) Donna

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well, this is just my opinion,if all possible, would seem better all around,it's better to leave a plant in the ground then dig it up and store
it in peatmoss over winter,if the roots can absorb nutrients, where as store tubers will have to grow roots before the foilage will ever start again.
I leave my cannas near the foundation of the house in the ground, and they come up faster, and flower early than digging up and storing in peatmoss,.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

You're probably right...but it take me to long...lol. I don't have any free opening in my beds to do that.

Wow! What did you do to make yours grow? Mine still hasn't done anything...sniff, sniff.
:) Donna

hanna, WY(Zone 4b)

I didn't do anything. lol. Just put them in the ground. I'm sure they got water when watering other plants. Funny, no foliage though. I'm real pleased with it. Thanks Yvonne

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I wonder why mine haven't grown than....weird.

I've found that magic lilies tend to sulk for a year after they've been divided or moved. I think those of you left wondering if you did something wrong will be pleasantly surprised next year. Some of mine never recieve any care at all, and show up every year looking great. I discovered this year that they look great growing with caladiums-2 layers of great color!

Archie, MO(Zone 5b)

I love how they just surprise you and pop up! I love surprises.

I had to leave my naked ladies behind when we moved, I miss them and need to find some more.

Planted one three years ago - nothing until this year!! Surprise!! Do they spread? Increase in number?

hanna, WY(Zone 4b)

Mine bloomed this year and now it looks like little bulbs on the ends. Is that what it is? Does anyone know? I thought they made new bulbs in the ground. Thanks for any help. Yvonne

SouthernlyYours -

I bought a couple bulbs about 2 years ago, and the first year they didn't come up at all either! I was pretty disappointed, but they were in a pot, and I decided to give them another year. Sure enough, this spring I had foliage popping up! Naked ladies don't like to be disturbed, so it can take them awhile to settle in.

As for the ones I have at my house in the ground, the flower stalks have begun coming up! I should have flowers in a week or so! Yay! I'd like to transplant them to another part of the yard, but it is pretty neat to see them appear in the lawn along the edge of the fence.
