Replacements for back/seat for director chairs

I have directors chair frames that are in good shape. the canvas seat/backs are soooo faded and I want to replace w/ sunbrella. Is my plain ol' sewing maching adequate to make these replacements? Strong enuf for the weight of people? What kind of thread and needle. A Singer, 25 years old.
