Water Garden in June

Bridgman, MI(Zone 5a)

I love Spring, everything seems to bloom and the toads start their courting ritual. I like listening to them at night.

July, alot more foliage. The water looks green because it is. I can't seem to clear it up with the normal products I use. As soon as we get some cooler weather I'll drain it and start again. I don't scrub it out, I just add fresh water and leave alot of the algae. It is only 150 gallons and small ponds are notoriously bad when it comes to keeping them clean.

The front side. The kitty stands watch over the pond and guards the goldfish and koi. Should I really be trusting a cat? He always looks so fat and happy... I wonder.

The back view. Porcupine grass and Honeycomb butterfly bush, among other plants.

This pic was supposed to be shown first, not the one posted. I messed up. I know you can't see the toads but they're there. (camera shy, but noisy). That's it folks...

Thank's for looking,
Anne

you have a lovely pond!!!

Your pond is attractive. I like the white stones surrounding it. Did you figure out whether or not the cat has eaten any fish?

you have a small pond like I do and it does get a lot of algie in warm weather. I learned a trick from a old time gardener/ ponder. here in cincinnati I just run a hose in the pond for 15 min. or so a week and the chemicals in the city water helps control the algie plus keeps the water cooler and i have pond plant's like water lettus to help with the shade and my fish are healthy and I've been doing it for almost two years with no problems

Fireant, I asked Miss Kitty if she has eaten any of my fish and she said no. She's not gained any additional weight so maybe she's telling me the truth. I have questioned the wisdom of having a cat guard the fish but I don't think it's any more foolish than having a rabbit guard my plants.
Thank you nDEBt for your comment, I appreciate it.
Jerry, you are probably right about using the hose to run new water into the pond. I've noticed after it rains that the water clears up somewhat. The green water doesn't seem to bother the fish any, just me. It used to be crystal clear. One of the problems is that the pond receives no shade whatsoever. Pond Shade, a product that turns the water a bluish shade has an undesirable affect. Any water lilies I put in there get destroyed by the Koi.
I'll try your advice and see what happens.
Thank you for your input.
Happy gardening all,
Anne

Jerry,
I forgot to mention that I really like your pond. It looks so natural. Good job!

Anne, my cat is a true hunter. Before he comes into the house, we have to check his mouth to make sure he hasn't brought in an unfortunate creature, especially one that is probably still alive and ready to jump, fly, scuttle, scurry, or hop out of his range. I think he does this on purpose because he is amused by our efforts to capture and set free whatever he brings into the house. When I finally install a water garden, I think I will try a fish and see what happens.
