and here is a picture showing the size (in perspective).

It is sharing that pole with a vigna caracalla, new dawn rose, and Donna Brigham passiflora...

Such a pretty vine. Does it bloom all summer?

Taylor -
HOW STUNNING!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Brugnanny-
Nope...the blooms are pretty short-lived. Some only lasted one day. Once they got pollinated, they dropped off...

Fortunately there were many clusters, so have had about two weeks of blooms, but they've already turned into seed pods and that is about that! lol...The foliage is pretty, though, but sparse. That is why I have it planted with so many other things...

Emma!-Thank you! (I planted your ume shimo seeds today! whoopee! )

Taylor,
QUESTION
I started seeds and have 5-baby Bauhinia yunannensis ---
hopefully the same as what you have growing. Yours is gorgeous.
With all that I've had going on taking care of my MG's, I haven't studied up on these. Will they be hardy in my zone 8aTX,
or should I dig them up later and pot them up to over-winter?
My 'expert advisor' *-*

Thanks,
LMK how your Ume Shimo turn out.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Emma-
Once again, I have good news for you! lol...(well, kinda...)

They are marginal in our zone. So, once again, (like the bauhinia TREE)I planted one, and saved one in the greenhouse.

The one I left outside was well established, and had grown 10 ft. up the pole. It came back just fine (I didn't supplement the water during the winter, so it wouldn't rot)

However, I don't think I'd recommend you put your little babies out for the winter. I just think they are too small, and since they are barely hardy, little ones wouldn't make it. A full grown-well established one?- no problem. They did die back to the ground, but just like the bauhinia purpurea, they came back from the roots. It is much bigger this year, than last year, too...

I think if you over winter your seedlings and them plant them out in Spring, you'll be posting these flowers next summer, yourself! lol...

Plus, certainly your jmg's take precedence!

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

*GASP* This has been on my wants list for 4 years now!! I have some seeds that are *supposedly* B. yunnanensis, but I haven't started them yet. I'm glad you reminded me of them!

Emma, I have a few seeds of our native Bauhinia (B. lunaroides ?). I think Taylor had sent me one or two a couple of years back, and then someone else sent me some. If ya want, I'll either start you one or send you what I can of my seeds (IF I can find them!).

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Stacey-
I know what you mean about things being on your wish list, even though you aleady have seeds for them in a box, somewhere! lol...

...so many seeds...so little time to plant them all! lol...

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Stacey, would Love to have some of your native Bauhinia seeds.
I think Taylor sent me some too, but haven't started them yet. I can use more, as I'm also getting some plants & trees started for my son and his wife who just bought a new home in Houston. I don't know if I have any seeds left of the Bauhinia yunannensis, but I'll check. I think I germinated all that I received. I'll email you and LYK where I got them.
Talk about SEEDS!
I feel like they are in control now. I can't believe the seeds that I have.
Too bad my daughter-in-law doesn't know the difference between a bean and a beanpole,
or she would have half of these seeds.....LOL

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, me too...like you said, Taylor, so many seeds, so little time...I'm afraid that some may go bad before I get a chance to plant them! It's such a collecting addiction, I have no idea where I thought I was going to put all this. I've got two boxes full, and two other trays with seeds that haven't been "filed" away for some reason or another. I've had reality crash in on me about a few of the things I traded for, finding out that they won't survive my zone, so I've been able to winnow things down some. Nowadays, I don't trade too much other than MG seeds. At least I know THOSE will keep.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm right there with ya! ...pretty much ditto to all you just said, lol...

Especially the trading part...I've had to dedicate an entire room to my seeds and realized my collecting was getting a little out of hand, lol...

Plus, so much easier to just buy what you want sometimes, rather than haggle/hammer out a trade...

Saw hummers on my bauhinia vine today. They were fighting over it!

Lucky you! I have not had any blooms yet. I have 2 of these planted with Mandevilla Laxa and Laxa is just starting to bloom. Hope Bauhinia hurrys up so I can have them open together.
Has your Podranea vine bloomed yet? Still nothing on mine.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

hi Donna!-
My yunannensis that is blooming is in a pot(that always makes them bloom faster) but propped up against the pole so it looks like it is growing there...I do plan to plant this one permanently in that spot, as soon as the ground dries out...

Anyway, what I am getting at is: that I have another bauhinia vine (corymbosa) on the opposite pole and it is IN the ground. It is the one I was nervous about last Fall(remember? we both were debating about over wintering, or not?), but made it through the winter just fine...anyway, it is not blooming and hasn't even set buds, yet. I think it is just not the correct time, and that the yunnanensis just bloomed early since its roots were constricted in a pot.

Same with the podranea. It is in the ground, and hasn't even set buds. It usually doens't until around my birthday in October. (that is how I remember it). I think both are right on time, just tricked my yunnanensis to bloom early his year, lol...

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Mine are in pots too, but I don't know if my bauhinia is a yunnanensis or corymbosa. The seeds I bought just said purple orchid vine. Is there a visual difference?
My podranea has about outgrown its pot, but I have not wanted to do anything until I got blooms. Not even trim back any of its outrageous growth that is threatening to swallow anything in its path. Talk about rampant growers!
But thanks for the October info, I had no idea what to expect. Now I can be a bit more patient for my first blooms.
Oh, forgot to tell you, my bauhinia did not even falter over the winter. It was right out in the elements & the freezes had no effect on them. The laxa lost its leaves, but that was it. I was pretty impressed. My kind of plants!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I knew you had no worries, since you are an entire zone warmer than I am...

October for me would probably be September for you, since you are in zone 9. So, you can expect them sooner than me...

Maybe you have corymbosa? You know, until next year when I have had both bauhinia vines come back from the ground, will it be fair to judge which variety blooms first...it could very well be that yunnanensis blooms earlier than corymbosa...? It could also be the pot vs. in the ground thing...hard for me to say until next year, lol...

Something that was supposed to not be hardy here, and not only was hardy, but stayed evergreen(or should I say silver) for the entire winter, was convolvulus sabaticus. It is a little groundcover small morning glory type plant with periwinkle colored flowers (some grow it in hanging baskets), and if "that is your kind of plant", you might also like the c. sabaticus...
-T

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, sorry...didn't answer your question...

No, there isn't a visual difference until they bloom...I've only had the yunannensis bloom for me so far, and it is a pinky lavender with bright dark violet veins...

I've seen many descriptions of the corymbosa as having a predominantly white flower with violet markings...hopefully I can be more specific when mine blooms...
:)

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

ok, I see what you mean. I typed in both names & found pics for both at Annies Annuals. An odd thing though, look what she says about the bloom time of the corymbosa:
http://www.anniesannuals.com/signs/list/new2.asp?id=2
and she lists it as fragrant! Now I am intrigued, I am a sucker for fragrant plants.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I read that a few days ago when I was re-looking them up, lol...

I noticed that, too, and my yunannensis is definitely NOT fragrant. That must be the primary difference, but I do think the blooms are supposed to be slightly different colors, too...

I have a second corymbosa in a pot...maybe I should hold off on the yunannensis, and plant the corymbosa there! ...guess I should wait until the corymbosa blooms(so I have a chance to smell it) and then decide...

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

And to see if it has a longer bloom cycle, once it starts. I was just out back trimming stuff back, this is our mow night, and I was checking mine out for buds. Not a one. Well, whichever I have I will be happy with. But that is not to say that I won't take a trip up to Annies in the Spring & get the corymbosa. LOL

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Gosh, I wish I could just "take a trip up to annies in the Spring"!! I think gardeners in CA definitely have the gardening advantage with that great climate, and wonderful nurseries...

When I visited, I spent my entire week shopping the nurseries and even drove several hours to get to some...
I really enjoyed it.

I've had brugs and iochromas for years, but didn't even recognize them in CA. They were huge trees!
We don't have nurseries like that, here...(*sigh)

The hummers have been working my flowers over daily, as well as the bees, so hopefully someone is pollinating them...I'd really like to end up with some seeds for winter trading, or mad money, lol...

Donna, are you in the north, or south?
-T

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

I am North by Sacramento. There are alot of great nurseries down South & in the Bay Area, but I have yet to find a great one near me.
I can just imagine all the plants you bought, lol, but how did you get them home?
I grew my bauhinia vine from seed, it was very easy. I have been trying to start cuttings, but the first batch died of neglect while I was in the hospital, and this new batch appears to be dying too, probably from the heat. Have you had any luck?

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

lol...I had to buy an extra suitcase and pack them all in there!, lol...I tried to take it as my carry on(so I could unzip it a little to give them air, lol...) but they said it was too big and that I had to check it. I really tried to cram it in the overhead compartment, but it was WAY too big, lol...(I got greedy)

most of them, I had to remove the pot and all the soil, and wrap in wet paper towels and plastic wrap, in order to squeeze them all in there! lol...

Glad to hear the seeds are easy...I haven't tried cuttings of this, but most of my cuttings haven't struck in this summer heat. I've resolved to wait another month, or two before trying any more cuttings, or seeds...

Hospital? Are you ok? Hope it was minor...
-T

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

LOLOL, too funny! I picture that as a "Meet the Parents" scene, you trying to wedge it in as a carry-on. Did they all survive? Did you think about them the whole trip? LOL
I am fine, my gallbladder just decided it did not want to be with me anymore. ;~)
Let me know if you have success with cuttings, I may need to change my method.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it was pretty embarrassing! I didn't know it wouldn't fit, but everyone looked at me like I did...it actually ALMOST fit, if it weren't for the little rollers on the bottom! lol...
They had to take it from me and call the guy on the ground that does the luggage. He drove over and loaded it at the last minute...

The flight attendant knew I didn't do it on purpose and told me that was actually the best way it could have happened. She said because it was added last, it would be on top and nothing would crush it, and it would be the first piece of luggage out...

hm...something to remember next time, lol...

Gallbladder, huh...glad it was nothing too major!

I think the cuttings thing is just the time of year...I think it is just too hot...
