Calla question,,,or maybe a question for Cala

Knoxville, TN

I bought a great yellow calla this spring and just noticed that a couple blooms I forgot to remove are filled with what looks like seeds. It is worth it to try to harvest these seeds or should I cut off the pods before it zaps the plant? Also, if I can harvest the seeds, at what point should I try to propagate them?

The seeds should turn red or tan when they are ripe. Just pluck them out of the calyx of the old flower, separate and plant about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. They should germinate fast if they are kept warm and take a year or two to flower from seed.

My black calla has one flower with seeds forming..I'm gonna take the seeds to work and see if they will grow, Thanks for da info calla ! :-)

You're welcome! They're easy, down here I just scratch up the dirt, toss the seeds in and water. They germinate pretty good but then I have to remember where they are and not plant something else on top of them!

Thanks for the info, Susie. I will give the seeds a shot. Do you know if seeds will be true to the parent? This one has yellow blooms and variegated leaves.

Mel, not sure about whether they come true, I didn't label the seeds(plus I'm so bad about digging around in stuff and mixing it up). This year I forgot where the callas were and planted elephant ears and gingers. The poor callas are getting crowded out. I guess it's better than what happened to the caladiums. I sat a big pot on them and didn't remember they were planted there till I saw a leaf poking out from under the pot!

Mel, One of my neighbors's has large yellow calla lilies (spotted leaves) that come back true from seed. She does like Susie and just scratches up the dirt and throws the seed in. Plus the good thing - - this particular calla lily is hardy in our zone.
