Houston Gardening Radio

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We here in Houston were blessed many years ago to have Bob Flagg as are Gardening Answer Man. (Yes...all you natives, I know, I am going way back) and I was blessed many years ago to have met Mr. Flagg not to long before his passing. Then we were blessed again with Ben Oldag. Mr. Oldag was on KTRH (I think) for several years and then went to KSEV for a couple years. Then in D. Pat's (Owner of KSEV...just fyi) bigest moment of sheer stupidity....Mr. Oldag was gone. I have contacted KSEV numerous time just trying to let them know how much I and others missed Mr. Oldag and really would love to get him back on the Radio. They do have Sean M. Kelley at 6am on Saturdays (and he and Belinda are wonderful") however thats it for Gardening Radio in Houston..(except for R.L) ...I can pick up some other Gardening shows from San Antonio and Austin, but the signals are pretty fuzzie......Does anyone out there know if Mr. Oldag is on any other stations in Texas?????? I really need a Mr. Ben Fix. (and if I have to listen to R.L. one more saturday, I may end up breaking a radio...or two)...(I dont care if he is an Aggie) Anyway....If any one has any info on Mr. Ben I sure would appreciate it.

Oh, boy, I'm so glad to hear that someone else misses Ben Oldag! You are quite right, he is VERY much missed! I do enjoy listening to Sean and Blinda, but we still need Ben! I happened to catch him once at the tail end of a radio program on... oh, it's a Christian station that recently moved from AM to FM, and I don't get the signal as well. I think it's 100.7 or something. They have a one-hr show on Saturdays about organic gardening, and he was a guest.

I completely agree with you about RL. I can't take much more than about 4 or 5 minutes of him! If I'm listening even that much, it's because I'm totally desperate to hear some gardening, but then I get mad, so...

I have been trying to stream John Dromgoole's Gardening Naturally on KLBJ http://www.590klbj.com/ , but haven't had any luck. The little bit I caught when I was in Austin was good. Made me miss Ben...

Maybe we should start a campaign to beg for Ben on KSEV (although I don't know if he would want to go back, under the circumstances.) What ever happened, anyway? He was there one week, and gone the next!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Maggie, I dont know what happened. You know they changed the hours of the show, starting it at 6am and that when on for awhile...and the like you said, One weekend he was there and the next weekend he wasnt. I called KSEV and could not get any inforation and E-mailed D.Patrick several times. All I ever got was an automaited response saying that "he thanked me for my coments however please understand that he does not read unsolisited e-mails". I did hear about the show on the Christian Station, however when I checked their site for show info I didnt find anything. I dont think that show is on anymore.

I have lisened to Naturally Gardening once or twice. The problem is the only way I can get it is if I am in my truck driving in a westerly/northwesterly direction..on a very clear morning and then its only for about a 4 mile strip. (the 4 miles between me an the grocery store) I guess I cound just keep going back and forth to the grocery store..over and over and over....I really need Ben back...

It would be nice if we got several of the gardening shows from Austin (I guess they might assume we have no forward thinking gardening Houstonians!). I espiecially would like to see or hear Tom Spencer's "Soul of the Garden". His website is fantastic!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, I have not heard of Tom Spencer. I will need to check out that website. Im sure that I could pick up the radio shows on the computer, but I just have this thing about getting up really early on Saturdays and Sundays, getting that morning cup of coffee and sitting on the back patio lisening to the garden...and my gardening radio. Its really the only time that I have with just me and my world.

The web site is really beautiful. I think you may be right about the assumption that there are not forward thinking Houstonians out there. It really is a shame that we can’t have something like this for Southeast Texas. I really wish we could get people to understand that Chemicals are not the answer to everything (Mr. Lemmon). Sometimes they are necessary, absolutely, but that should be a last resort....not a first.

I did a little looking a came across this radio show on KKHT 100.7 FM by John Foster, from what I understand Ben Oldag was also on this show for awhile but is now gone. The link is http://www.environmentcare.com/index.htm. I think the web site said that the show is on from 8 to 9 am on Saturdays on 100.7 FM and also on 1070 KNTH AM between 4 and 5 pm on Saturdays. Can’t hurt to check it out.

That's the show I was talking about! I don't get the reception very well, I'm like you - have to be traveling in the car in a certain direction, in a certain area, and heaven forbid if I have to drive (or worse yet, stop) next to a transformer!

ARRRGGHH!
