I've never seen a calla in the flesh or a bulb. I've always admired pictures and decided to buy some on Ebay last week. They look like they could have been dead and on a shelf for years. I planted them anyway and will not post feedback until I see life or give up. Can anyone tell me if they are supposed to be like this or are they supposed to be moist like a lily or canna. Thanks.
Ebay calla bulbs
Depending on the variety, but they could look like a potatoe or a very clean shaven Caladium. These have white flesh. Then there is the Aethiopica that looks like a carrot, but then brown. Do you know the variety you bought?
They are the variety Cameo, peach colored. These things are as hard as a rock and similar to a caladium in shape and irregular surface. I think if I beat it with a hammer it would'nt hurt it. There's no give, no moisture. I was under the impression that these were fresh home grown but they had wood shavings on them and I am strongly suspecting they were originally in one of those bags all the stores sell and left over from at least 2003. I've never had a dispute with an ebay seller before but I feel one coming on. Thanks for your input.
Indeed.......a healthy Calla is firm, but you can push your nail in it without any problem. Sorry.
Hi There,
I am an ebay seller in Australia and (windale2211) and grow and sell calla lillies myself. I have even this year given up my full time job to completely devote my time and energy into my mail order business for callas.
Healthy callas should look a bit strange but not soft like squishy soft. They should be firm and have eyelets coming out of them, similar to a potato eye. Mine are all treated with a funguside before packaging to make sure that they are protected from little germs that can cause the bulb to rot.
If you are interested in looking at the callas I have to offer you can view my website (which I have set up myself, and still only learning) or you could go to ebay and have a look for me under windale2211. My webstore gives you a small idea of what the lillies are like: www.windaleenterprises.com
I hope that this helps you.
Cheers
Windale
Thanks. I'll check it out. Congratulations on making a go of it. I think a lot of us are wannabees and it's encouraging to hear a success story.
