This one is the first one I ever had, and just thrilled me with all the blooms. Cannot wait til I see Elizabeth or some of the other ones bloom.

Foley, AL

when do we need to get everything in the ground by? is it october?

I was wondering if it is too late now to put something in the ground; I have heard not to plant after August 15th cause it would not have time to make good enough roots to make it through the winter. At least , not tropicals. Have you heard that?

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

That may be for some zones.
I usually stop planting on Labor Day.
Although, my friend in Pensacola that I helped with her plants last year insisted we plant in early November, because that was the first chance we got to do it after the hurricane and all. Anyway, she didn't really lose anything we planted. All the hibiscus, ee's, and palms we planted made it, along with a ti plant, hedychiums, costus(even the variegated one), and curcumas. The zone is close to mine. I'm 8b, she might be 3-5 degrees warmer. I checked with her on cold days to see what her temps were. The only one that suffered was the false bird of paradise, which just started peeking its head up a couple of weeks ago.
I like to be a little safer and cut off at labor day.

You know that is probably one of the best smelling hedychiums and I don't have a single one of them in the swamp. Going to have to fix that!

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

I love this one because the fragrance is wonderful and I think the blooms are so pretty. Glad that it is blooming for you Roz and you are enjoying it.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Do you grow it in sun, partial sun or the shade Roz?

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

I like the scent of Hedychiums even better than brugs (which I love) as the scent lasts around the clock!

I hope mine start to bloom soon! And I already have plans to yank some things out to make room for more gingers next year.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Lilypon, it is in full sun, with lots of water, well drained. It looks droopy in the middle of the hot sun, but perks back up with water or when the sun goes down.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Roz I'll be moving mine out.....do you also grow the Nun's Orchid ginger (and, if so, in what conditions?)

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I did not even know the Nun's Orchid was a ginger, but I got one just this year. I do not have it in the sun, it is in the shade. I can't say that it is growing very much, and thinking about putting it in more sun. I think most of the people I know around here do not have theirs in the full sun.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It may not be.......It's very new to me. ;) Thank you for the information (sounds like yours is growing like mine). It grew better in the winter but lately has stalled. :(

Thanks again Roz. :)

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Trish remeber to get some when you come. They were the first ginger I ever had. Got them from Gloria L.

Foley, AL

Doggone, I paid 10.00 for mine. Then Barbara Ward gave me some.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

How long do the Gingers usually take to flower?
From the time they start Spring growth?
I've yet to get any blooming.

Ric

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Don't feel bad Roz, I paid $16 for my first one, it died, paid $11 for the 2nd after a hurricane George plant sale, then, I finally got one to live that I got in a trade. Only I can kill the easy stuff.

Donna.. and Ely... going to take you up on that... I'm going to be doing a surprise (not a surprise now.. ) road trip to Donna's in the near future... maybe we can do a quickie mini get together... and I can bring you some more weeds :)

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Ric, I think it depends on what kind of ginger you have, though I am just learning about gingers myself. My butterfly ginger is a faithful bloomer, and I only had it one year before it bloomed. Course I got it in the early spring and it bloomed in August the first year I had it. It is blooming now, and has been for a few weeks. I have greenii, and this is the second year, and it bloomed for the first time a few weeks ago. Ayo , two years old, is blooming; Disney, two years old has a bloom beginning, but that is about all I have blooming now.

Janet, do you leave your Nuns Orchid in the ground all year, or is it in the greenhouse?
