I cannot grow dill.............what am I doing wrong? I have tried twice to grow it. Thanks, Patty
dill
Hi Patty
I love dill and have usually had very good luck with it in the past, but this year ... well, I've lost mine 3 times. I'm blaming it on the heat and too much rain. Is yours in containers? Wish I could offer some advice. Maybe someone else will give you some words of wisdom. Good luck!
That makes me feel a little better knowing you have had problems. Yes mine is in a large container. Thanks for responding
Both of you! In zone 8! Try dill in cooler weather.
I tried and failed, several times, before someone finallly said the word "dill" to me in the same sentence as "winter crops." And the light bulb went off over my head. Plant in November and see how you do. Or February. We definitely get too much rain in the summer time in FL to support dill without root rot. (That's why the caterpillars eat all the fennel.)
Thanks, Dogzilla. I had sort of figured it must be the rain and heat. I know what you mean about the catapillers. They just stripped my parsley! They sure do love the stuff. I can check it before I go to bed and not see a thing ... wake up the next day and it's gone! Back to the dill. Do you buy yours at local stores such as HD, order it online or plant yours from seed?
I've grown dill to the point that I had more "dill cubes" in the freezer than anything else, but not this year. It just hasn't made it. It has been hotter for longer periods this summer, and I seldom have had it hold up through late summer before, so I am going to try it earlier next year. I'm betting that will make the difference, because I was later getting it in this year than I usually do. I had never really thought about it as a cooler herb, but appearantly, it is. At least now I know it isn't just me this year!
Thanks for all your info. I will try it again in Nov. I think I might have watered it too much and it does get really hot here. It has been as hot as 106 this summer. Thanks again for your help.
Patty
I buy mine from a local native nursery, because they tend to sell herbs with butterfly eggs already on the plants. (Sort of a bonus, if you actually WANT the critters!) If they don't have dill, I'll hit the Target garden center/Home depot/Whatever your favorite source for cheap herbs is. I don't have the patience to grow much from seed.
