Sunburned hoyas

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi all, I have a couple of my hoyas in a little plastic greenhouse outside, it looks like I sunburned some of the leaves pretty bad, again. Should I just leave them out of the greenhouse, or put a sheer sheet over it for protection. I don't understand how to get the hoyas used to the outdoors.

Heather,

Can you put them so they are in the shade? If not you do need to use shade cloth over them. Do you have a tree you can them under where they would be shaded all day?

Hoyanut has good ideas. Generally, hoyas enjoy shade with bright "indirect" light....so a shade cloth (suggest 80%) over your little greenhouse ought to do it. Or hanging them in trees..... The burn will stay, but soon you won't notice it with the new growth.... no worries.

Thank you! I bought a gazebo from Walgreen's today, 10' by 10', I am going to try putting them under this to protect them from direct sun. It says it provides uv protection. Hope this works out!! Thanks you two~~

Your temps have been really high...when the plants are in those little greenhouses the heat/sun is intensified...hanging them in the shade would really help....and hose them daily if you can....

Carol, after much rain yesterday, the temps have finally cooled down..sigh...
I moved my hoyas into a little shade area from my roof. I have trees, but they are huge, I would have to climb a ladder to hang them from. I am kind of clumsey, so I better not do the latter. Thanks for the help as always!

Could you 'affix' (hate to say 'nail') a pole to one, or tie a clothesline from one to the other to hang them on. Sounds like you have it wired!!!

Ooo....a gazebo...how fun. For you AND the plants.
I keep seeing those in Target, etc and thinking of all the fun I could have hanging plants around on it & then putting a nice table & chairs in the middle to have breakfast & read the paper while I ponder my plants.
Unfortunately, I have no ROOM left for one. Ha. Show us a pic when you get it set up.

Bad news, the gazebo is too large for where I wanted to put it. I am in the process of moving hoyas all over the place. Some in the back yard, some in the porch and some on the balcony. I want to move them all on the balcony, but this is where I got another bad sunburn. I don't understand how you get them used to full sun. I feel like I am taking gradual steps. I bought the gazebo for the shade cloth it comes with. I might just keep it for that and try and rig up my own gazebo for the balcony, and then put all of the hoyas up there. Seems like a lot more work for not much more summer here in MN. Anyone else out there in zone 4 that has all of their plants outside?

Heather...unless you are

1. dealing with early morning or late afternoon sun
or
2. dealing with Eriostemmas

hoyas really don't take a full hit of sun...even in MN! LOL Light is a different matter...full sun is full of nasty stuff (remember to use your sunscreen). When at David Liddles, I learned that 80% shade is ideal...but remember...80% shade cloth lets in a lot of light...but not the sun.

Hope this helps.
