Is there a safe way to remove this so that they are still safe to use?
powdery mildew on herbs
i didn't know they could get PM? did you tear off a leaf, and try rinsing with baking soda? i wouldn't eat the affected leaves myself, but pinch them back, and hope for new growth, control PM with a natural spray of 1 tbsp each of baking soda, oil, & soap in 1 gallon water, spray weekly...

Well, I had some cuttings in water that starting developing a white powder like film on them. So I was looking around for it online and found a picture of lemon balm that had the same thing, mine just didn't have as much. Should I throw the cuttings out and start new or will they recover?
i would start over whenever possible...
Make a strong chamomile tea and spray your cuttings with pm and also use to water seedlings to prevent damping off. If you can drink the leftover "treatment," it's gotta be good, right?
Which of your herbs got PM?
You might consider making sure they are thinned enough to get good airflow through them. If it is bee balm, that is very prone to PM and you need a cultivar specifically bred to be resistant if you want to use the leaves.

It was basil, but I sprayed with the chamomile tea several times and kind of wiped them down and it took care of it. It's been several days and no more so....looks like everything is doing good again. I'm guessing on the powedery mildew....it was white powder on the leaves, but when I first saw it and wiped it away it came right back. It's been about 3 days or so since I sprayed and there has been no more white so I guess it was taken care of. Thanks for the tips everyone! Fran
