In early June I bought Jamaica Yellow from a local nursery and it kept on growing up and up and up. Finally at 4 1/2 feet tall, first Y and first bud. I'm surprised it took so long to Y. I had had it in a location where it received direct sun until about 3pm and moved it a couple weeks ago so it only gets full sun until about 1.
What a strange looking bud. I've never seen a curved bud before.
Is Jamaica Yellow a stingy bloomer
Hi Emily
I don't know if it's something else, someone I'm sure will come along and tell you hopefully correctly but when mine did this same thing as your's...it was after we had had so much rain for days and days at a time. They curled up and did things they don't normally do lol. Anyhow, I think if this is the first flush...it will just get better...mine did :-)
I don't think it's anything to worry about. I can't wait to see when she opens & blooms for all of us to view her beauty :-)
Hugs
Julie
HI Emily, My JY is stingy with her blooms too, it's 2 years old. and hasn't bloomed but 2 blooms on it this year, but I did take it out of the pot and trim the roots, and once it got a bad c ase of mites, which slowed it down quite a bit and it dropped all it's leaves, it's just now coming bck, and I noticed several blooms on it now.

Emily,
Where did you buy it from? It is hard to find brugs around here.
Jeremiah
I bought it at the Portland Nursery. Al's also has a bunch of Brugs, although they're marked as Daturas.
Jeremiah, I believe she got some of these at Al's. They have had brugs there for the past 3 years I have been going there. The problem is they don't know much about them. LOL
I was there about a month ago and the lady tried to tell me they won't be getting the purple ones in this year. LOL I even had an argument over Datura / Brugmansia. She said we do have them in Purple also and walked away after I told her they would me millionaires if they had a Purple Brug.
There have been three garden shops here in the Salem area that have brugs. They are usually tagged Yellow, White and Pink Brugmansia/Datura.
They are catching on but not many know how to care for them.
marked as Brugmansia/Datura - on one tag? as in "take your pick"???? lol!
Tell them Angels Trumpets point down, from heaven. Devils Trumpets point up, from out of hell. Angels also pray. Not sure, but I don't think I've ever seen my Daturas pray in the evening.

When I went to Al's, all of their "daturas" were brugs as every single bud and/or bloom was hanging down. They even had some double whites blooming. When I asked if they sold brugmansia's, I got this strange look and the woman had never heard of them before. However, they pointed me in the right direction once I asked them if they carried daturas or angel's trumpets. The only person there who knew the difference between the two was a grey-haired man at the information desk. Portland Nursery has theirs correctly marked along with which type it is, although they are a couple dollars more.
guess we pay for knowledge, lol!
There is a somewhat legitimate reason/excuse for the confusion in nomenclature. Until recently, Brugmansia were considered part of the Datura genus. (Yes, they have different growth habit, etc. However, some of the older printed literature doesn't differentiate between them ;o)
How much were the brugs at Al's and what size pot were they in??
Brugs were $8.99 for 1 gallon sized brugs. They had some variegated, single peaches, double whites and couple pinks. Each plant has a colored tag that corresponds to the color of the bloom.
Terry,
Do you know how long ago brugmansia split off the datura genus?? I still get lots of people that call them Datura or the classic "I have a beautiful double purple angel's trumpet" which of course usually starts a heated discussion on how there is not such a thing. Anyways, I look forward to your answer.
Jeremiah
I'm not Terry... but here is a Brugmansia timeline that I use as part of my Powerpoint presentation when I go out and give talks about these beautiful plants.
1714 ~ First illustration of a Brugmansia. Originally classified as a genus of Datura.
1805 ~ Botanist Christian H. Persoon renamed the tree forms Brugmansia in honor of Sebald Justin Brugmans (1763-1819).
Years of name changing between Brugmansia and Datura added much confusion to these plants.
1973 ~ Based on the work of T.E. Lockwood, the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature reclassified the old genus Datura into 2 separate genera: Datura and Brugmansia
As you can see, it has been well over 30 years since the two serparate generas were formed. I think that the difference in plant classification didn't catch on because Brugmansias were not as popular, easily attainable and/or traded like they have become within the past 6 years.
I had a little talk with this brug and told her she was going to the compost pile unless she started blooming. Nothing. So I decided it would be better to just make cuttings of her for people to enjoy. She must have liked this idea as she's loaded with buds now. She's still growing a lot so looks like I'll have one or two more cuttings to send out.
Editted to say this pic displays the "Y" very clearly.

sometimes they just take awhile! Some are early bloomers, some are not!
