Have: 4 leaves of 'Beca's Botswana'
I'd love to try myhand at them for postage..... all my AV's are no names, and I don't have many plants for trade, lots of seeds tho :-)

Keep me in mind if you prune your 'Buckeye' cultivars, or any others with variegated foliage... or were we going to trade plantlets?
'Beca's Botswana' does have lovely, delicate blooms, but I'm trying to resist since I have so many new leaves started at the moment. I know I have an AV "problem," since my first reaction to this sort of post is always, oooh!! me!! me!! I'd like one!!! LOL We'll just see what you have that "needs pruning" when we do our trade! :-)
I have just started getting into AV's and would love a named one..I can do postage or maybe cuttings from something else?

Karen, what sort of plants or cuttings do you have? I'm hoping to have both leaves & some plantlets ready to send in September, both named varieties & "beautiful NOIDs," will post a list next month. We need to find you a 'Marion's Enchanted Trail'! I just found a replacement for mine, but it's very tiny, so I doubt I'll have any plantlets from it for quite some time...
Woofens & Karen--I can divide up some leaves for the both of you. Postage is fine.

Critter......I'd originally posted that I'd start some leaves for you, and then was thinking, "Hmm.......where?!" lol My room is becoming a bit, say, limited. ;-) I still can, if you'd just really prefer, but if possible, I'd like to just trade leaves? LMK.........=)
Now, also have about eight "Rebel's Midnight Sky" leaves to add to the Beca's........

I can do cuttings of Pandorea Vine(varigated and also have seeds),Mandavillea vine(pink flower), Confederate Jasmine, another Jasmine,a purple clemetis,Snow On the Mountain. I have never done cuttings from these so someone would have to tell me how to do it right. I have some AV's but they are no name from walmart and lowes..I would love to find some varigated ones...
MKJones, How much postage do you need and you can do the cheapest way if you think they will hold up, If not then I will pay for whatever way you think is best.

ooOOOhhh... The confederate jasmine & mandavillea sound lovely, Karen! I have a regular jasmine, and I love the scent! Is the Pandorea vine scented? I can see I will have to get after DH to put up that rod for hanging baskets he's been promising me...
A leaf trade would be fine. I was thinking plantlets partly because my Buckeyes are so new they don't have lots of spare leaves yet, but with luck I'll get a number of plantlets from the couple of leaves I've started. Also, some of the variegated ones can be tricky to start, but it looks like my Buckeye leaves have rooted with no trouble.
I have 'Buckeye Bellringer' and 'Buckeye Boysenberry'. I also have 'Grape Slush', which has very similar cream & pink variegation.
Karen, I can try the mail, but with the heat, it would be chance'y. I'm packing extra leaves in w/Woofens, to ensure the best bang for your Priority postage buck! lol
Let me know your preference, and I'll mail out today, either form....
A couple of AV plantlets I sent out recently arrived a little wilted (hope they made it!). I'd advise shipping by Priority Mail. I'm not sending AVs out again until the weather cools a little, but leaves probably would hold up better.
I agree, Critter. And, I'm going to start leaves for you..........you're right on variegates taking more prodding.........already have a 'Buckeye Everlasting' going for you..........been a month!
And, wow-----your AV's listed above are DIVINE! Looked at their pics in 1st Class..........I'm too excited! Bought 'Ellie Gardner' the other day too.........my first variegated trailer (have Sunrise Waltz, but only gets faint crowning vari.).......I'll share her too!

Oh, how lovely! Maybe we can get a big plantlet swap going for fall... I figure that will be a good time to ship, after this 90+ degree stuff ends but before freezing temps arrive!
I wanted to add that I don't know if some of the ones I'm starting will be much further along than tiny plantlets or a well rooted leaf (I'm not getting those record 2 or 3 weeks until "ears" times!) before the weather turns cold, but I figure I can try to send a backup leaf as well!

Good idea critterologist! I have lots of leaves starting now. I'm not noticing any growth records either, but I'm sure I'll have some something by fall. Count me in!

the pandorea vine is beautiful. It had one small bloom on it when I got it but it got broke off and it hasnt bloomed since.......
I love the jasmine too....I can do these now or wait till fall when it is cooler. Let me know what you want to do.

Waiting for cooler weather sounds good to me! The last couple of AV babies I sent out suffered in the heat, I think. I'll make a note in my trade tracker! Dmail & LMK if there are any colors or varieties you especially like...

Karen, Rob's has great information on leaf starting and many other things on the culture pages at http://www.robsviolet.com/
Click on "culture corner" then on "lessons" then on the link to "propagating african violets by leaf," and that should take you to this page, http://www.robsviolet.com/violets_by_leaf.htm (I included directions in case that link didn't work out).
I like to dip the tip of the stem in rooting hormone powder for extra peace of mind, but it's probably not necessary. I use a mix of at least half perlite to half soil-less potting mix (like Pro Mix, which has peat moss, vermiculite & perlite in it).
Starting violets from leaves isn't especially tricky, although sometimes you'll lose a leaf for no apparant reason. But it does take patience... which will be rewarded when those little "ears" come poking up out of the soil!

I've had pretty good success in starting violets from leaves. Before placing the leave in a small pot, I cut the leaf in half crosswise. I understand this helps the energy go into the new plants instead of back into the leaf. I use regular comercial av potting soil without extra stuff in it. The moisture is better for rooting.
Next I water well and put the pot in a ziplock sandwich bag. Zip it shut. Put it in window light but not sun. Then forget it for about a month. I do check every so often to make sure it's not too wet. Sometimes I open the bag for a couple of hours and then seal it back up again.
You can end up with more violets than you know what to do with.

WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!! I have roots on one of the Becas Botswana leaves you sent me...I put one in water and 2 I potted. The one in the water has the roots, the other 2 died. I am tickled to have the one since this is the first time I have done this. Thanks sooo much for letting me experience this..I think I am hooked LOL

Congrats, Karen! I've never done water babies, but I wanted to check to make sure you'd seen the info on other threads about gradually adding soil (with lots of vermiculite or perlite, I think) to the water rather than transplanting the babies suddenly...
