Cape Freels, Newfoundland

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

I just got back from a week long trip to Cape Freels, located along the notheast coast of Newfoundland. My father grew up in a small community called Newtown. Here's a few pics from the trip. This is the Anglican church in Newtown.

This is Barbour House, a recreated 'village' from the late 1800's. It is a popular tourist attraction in Newtowen, complete with restaurant and dinner theatre.

Another shot of Newtown, a typical fishing village in Newfoundland.

And here is Cape Freels, perhaps the best sand beach in all of Newfoundland. It is about 20 minutes drive from Newtown. Unlike Florida, there is not a soul around only the birds....it was 28 C the day I was there.

Here are two Newfoundland ponies among the buttercup and blue flags at Cape Freels.

This the the Newfoundland Short-tailed butterfly, an endemic butterfly found around the coasts of Newfoundland. They are especially common at Cape Freels.

The Cape is full of blue flag iris but this one stood out being such a pale blue.

Oh Todd it's sooooooooo wonderful to see pictures of your area! Ü Like Saskatchewan I have the feeling peeps don't feel crowded there. ;) How wonderful to see the ocean off your father's doorstep. Ü

My son is the only one in our immediate family that has been near there.....we will have to change that. ;)

Idyllic.......often used phrase for those pictures but sooooo very apt. :)

Edited to say how gorgeous the colours are of Barbour House against the ocean. Still sighing here.

Fiannlay, a last shot taken in Valleyfield, a community about 15 minutes from Newtown. This was the scene across the street from the motel I stayed in. It was calm and nearly 30 C all week!

Todd, your photos are always awe-inspiring. Had to call my dh to show him these gorgeous shots. You really ought to be a photographer for National Geographic! Thanks again, for sharing. :Donna

I always enjoy your trips Todd. These are especially nice photos. Nice to see more of YOUR area.

What beautiful country Todd. Your pictures gave me a sense of calm and serenity. It is a timeless place, isn't it? --Ginny

What absolutely lovely shots of a truly picturesque province. You have a very good eye Todd.

Todd, the compliments are very apt. You are a wonderful photographer and sharer of history. I did get to Nfld, but not up the penninsula. Looking at these photos, I missed something very beautiful.

These pics were not from the Northern peninsula. Cape Freels is located along the northeast coast of the island, just east of Twillingate, a popular tourist destination.

Here is another pic of Newtown, the village where my father grew up.

I did manage to get to Twillingate.

I wish I could remember the name of the village that I ended up in. It was east of Windsor/Grandfalls. I was driving east, found a road going north off the highway and followed it to the end. (I know, it could be anywhere) It was a small fishing village, had one general store with lunch counter. They also had an area where soap stone had been carved from the hills. At the end of the road, past the store where I got my $10 BLT sandwhich, there was a small walking bridge out to a maybe 40' round rock with a picnic table on it. That was idyllic. It was a lovely day, calm waters, and no bugs. One of my good memories of NFLD. That trip was in the summer of '97

Lucky you, Linda. I have always wanted to visit the Atlantic end of Canada. Hopefully, someday. :)

Great pix Todd. Reminds me of Tiverton NS where my Grandma came from, it's at the end of Digby Neck. Wonderful fishing villages that haven't changed for a long time.

These are lovely pictures that you have shared with us Todd. I enjoyed them very much. My Son-in-law is from Newfoundland, and I think I'll send these pictures on to him.
