The stem on this bud is 6 1/2 " long the bud is 15" long, cant wait to see her open.
Milk & Honey today
Your pictures are so good now Doris. What a bloom. I want to hear about this ones scent.
kell my buds are beyond my wildest dreams, no wonder you are all BRUGAHOLICS
Doris, is that the looooong bud you had?? It looks like it's really going to be nice...
We need an updated picture here Doris.
If you love flowers, brugs sure deliver the goods. LOL
Jeepers Creepers! This one might hit a record! Too cool! Can't wait to see it!
Doris, it's a 100 here with high humidity.
ahelms, I sure feel sorry for you, we had 99 yesterday, and was warned to stay inside, I just can't keep up with the watering
Finally...we got rain and it is 72 degrees. Wonderful weather. My brug buds, what was there, are all pretty much fried. I hope your bloom had some fragrance last night. It is too bad that they don't smell great during the day too. I can just imagine a tree full of those blooms swaying in the breeze.
Doris, it's supposed to be 102 today. Everything outside looks pitiful and droopy.
So Doris, who ever told you stay inside is right. No sense getting heat stroke. Can you just go out early in the morning to water them and then after sundown? I know that was what I would do in NJ last summer when I was at my Mom's. It was too hot and muggy during the day to be out in it working in her garden.
So are the ants up into the bloom? Do you have aphids? Don't they milk the aphids for their nectar they collect??
Ada, poor Ada. You stay inside too, girl. You are going to kill yourself, you work so hard.
Kell I always water in the evening, sometimes after dark when it is cooler and the sun doesn't dry up the water befor the plants can get it.
Then you get to smell them also!!!
Kareoke, is your name Doris? I stay so confused! I'm glad I'm not the only one that waters after dark sometimes. Do the mosquitoes bite you when you're out late?
Susie, the mosquitoes are horrible here. I thought they were all in NC. LOL Early morning and in the evening here, they'll eat you alive. LOL
Calalily, yes I am Doris, and no the Mosquitoes are not bad at all.
and kell the ants were all over the flower, but mostly inside. no other bugs or blight of any kind
Ada, Susie, anyone else, try Bayer Mosquito Granules, safe for animals. Best I've found so far, helps lots, but doesn't eliminate, but everyone notices they are better. I water after dark too...
GardenGuyKin, I had to kinda lay it over a leaf, but the weight of her still made her reach the ground, she is right at 16"
I'll have to pick some up, Sherry. I hope something helps. LOL
Geesh Suz, you have to worry about more than getting bitten by mosquitos........................ remember jaws with a tail!!! You shouldn't be out there at night. Tell big footed Bleu we expect him to guard you!!!
I have looked and looked for that here, Sherry. I have to break down and look for it online I guess. I can only get the dunks. I want it for fungus gnats.
Poor Ada, you really are having a bad time of it. I feel so bad for you! I picture you as beat red with heat stroke and all lumped up from bites.
I hope the ants leave Doris!! It sure is pretty.
Kell, I'm not positive that the Bayer Mosquito Granules will work for fungus gnats, but, as I recall, the other stuff Mosquito Dunks (I get mine in chunks), doesn't say anything about the fungus gnats but it must work because I've never had the gnats - I alternate the two mosquito products. My cement pond was turned on and left on backwash, by error, for, I'd say 3 or 4 hours, and there is pool water from here to kingdom come, it's margarita time...
The Mosquito Dunks have BTI in them, a form of Bacillus thuringiensis v. israelensis in a solid form. It is the BTI that kills the gnats, Susie told me. So far it has worked. Is BTI what yours has in it, Sherry?
Kell, we've had storming here since I read your post and I haven't been able to check. Loretta told me about the Bayer and she has a pond in TN, not all that far from us and so I tried them and like them too, for mosquitoes. If you are looking for something for the fungus gnats, I'd go with the Mosquito Dunks (I use the chunks) because I know they work for fungus gnats, BUT, that is NOT mentioned on their label that I have been able to find...but I use it, alternating with the Bayer for mosquitoes, so I suppose I'm covered for fungus gnats...
I was hoping with the granules I wouldn' t have to let the water sit over night like I do with the dunks in it. But I am getting more oraganized with them. I fill up the pitcher as soon as I use it up and then it is ready when I need it again.
kell I use the ganules and I am sure that is why I have no Mosquitoe problem, now I am fighting a war with Japanese Beatles and they are tough to get rid of.
Doris... I've been watching this thread and doing a little prayer that I somehow get a bloom on mine this fall. I didn't get them till late but seeing yours... whew!
If it's just mosquitos in the yard, you might want to give Backyard Cutter a shot. I heard about it on an evening news channel comparison and tried it. Hook the bottle up to the the hose and go around spraying everything. Really cleared them out and lasted a couple of weeks. I've seen 3.5 mosquitoes this year with the drought and have only gotten to squish two of the beetles. But everytime I run into one of my Praying Mantis I see they're growing well meaning there's a lot of dead bugs. Saw one yesterday almost 2.5" long. I set 4 egg casings out around the yard the first of June.
I've never soaked the dunk crumbles, I just water it in. And, I use the Cutter spray too and, I'd love to hear if any of you find any thing better for mosquitos, I'm always looking for a better mousetrap...
I am making a bid on 3 cutting from EBay for $2.99. Maybe I will have one growing good by next spring.
I was told by a DG member that she uses Mosquito dunks to water her overwintered brugs and that takes care of gnats. Has anyone else tried this? When you have them darn things in the house in your plants you are willing to try anything as long as it is safe for the brugs.
That is what I use Linda for fungus gnats. They used to work great but lately they seemed to have stopped working. I was so grossed out by watching the little evil doers flying all over the other day on my brug cuttings tray. They must have just hatched from the soil there were so many of them. I had a spray botttle of Mosquito Killer Plus by Bayer so I just sprayed above the brugs and then left fast and shut the door. THEY ARE GONE!!!
Good luck on your ebay cuttings. They dhould be big by next spring!
