My wife desires to feed the squirrels. I tried to plant bulbs last fall and did not have much luck because, I think, the squirrels dug up the bulbs and eat them. What can I do to prevent this from happening again this fall when I want to plant bulbs?

planting bulbs
The advise I've read often says put them in cages. I think there might be chemical dips or something like that; this reputedly repels critters.
After planting, preferably in the evening when the squirrels are resting, leave the planted area like you found it. It is the curiosity that has them digging. Also plant them about an inch deeper than what is on the package. If you have some chicken wire, place that first over the planted area and secure it with some stakes, branches, etc and then cover it, flatten it and water it.
Then feed the squirrels in another part of the garden, I bet they like peanuts better than bulbs.
