Average lifespan for birds?

Chapin, SC(Zone 7b)

Just had to share a pic of our blooming bird of paradise. (For perspective, the wall behind is 6 ft. high). Does anyone know how long they live? There are a few really big ones in my neighborhood, which is about 40 years old, and I'm wondering if they could be from the original builder's foundation plants.

Clumps of Bird of Paradise at my grandparents former home are almost 60 years of age and still growing. I think it is likely that the large clumps in your neighborhood were planted when the development was landscaped.

Oriole,

I don't know if this is accurate, but I have heard that they can take up to 7 years to bloom. Hang in there.

Don't worry about the pot. I had one bloom in my GH in Rochester, NY. That was in about a 6" pot. It did take a long time, though...Keep watering and don't give up..

I had one bloom this year in my GH
its been in a pot for 4 years ,is still small and just bloomed
I have a HUGE white one which has never bloomed in 4 years
So I think they just bloom when they are ready, they don't have to be huge
