Tropical corner in hell

Acton, CA(Zone 8b)

Just moved into this house 7 months ago, and nothing but hedges and lawn planted here... no canopy for growing tropicals in the super hot and a bit too cold valley here east of Los Angeles. But this one corner of the house gets minimal sun so am able to support some relatively tropical life. The rest of the yard is mostly a cactus garden now, but I do have palms started in front that will someday (some decade) form a canopy.

Well, Bob, it looks to me like you have a good start! Where there's a will there's a way. You know we plants nuts all try to grow stuff where they are not supposed to grow just to prove that we can!

Good luck! I think it's gonna be gorgeous!

Can you grow Malabar Chestnut there? We find it grows quickly and makes good canopy for the tropicals....

I don't know much about Malabar Chestnut... is it fast? The palm in the photo are Howeas on the left, Chambeyronia in the middle, Parlor palm in the very back left, Basselinia and two species of Chuniophoenix in the center back, Metallic palm in front of them, and the rest are ferns and cycads.

You are a brave man. I have thought about moving to a place with a larger yard, but the prospect of starting over is just too daunting. When you get to be a geezer (63) redoing four years worth of work will do that.
