Michigan Nurseries selling Daylilies

Albion, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi!
What I want more than anything right now is to walk around a daylily farm and pick out my favorites to take home. But I have developed some physical challenges in the past year that make it impossible for me to walk any distance. For the first time I am now doing mail order and have tried the Lily Auction, but for a lot of reasons, they are not my favorite way to buy daylilies. I get excited seeing the daylillies all growing next to each other, and getting a real perspective on size and color! But since that is no longer possible, I would enjoy even finding a nursery that carries a large and changing supply of interesting quality potted daylilies, not the same-o, same-o over and over. Do any of you have any suggestions in your area? I love to take daytrips (with my husband on weekends, and with friends during the week) so if you know of a great nursery - or even better, a grower with a golf cart they would let me use in the rows, please let me know. I have pretty much decided that I don't want to order from anyone south of zone 6, and I really would rather support our Michigan growers and smaller nurseries (not the home improvement places).
Thanks,
Judy

Phil Lisik has a small operation in Hemlock, just W. of Saginaw. His gardens alone are worth the trip. He specializes in daylilies and Hosts, but he has many other interesting plants as well. Both he and his his wife Ginger are very personable & helpful. If you're interested in more info, a phone #, or address, contact me & I'll provide.

Tapla and Notmartha, Thank you for your responses. I did find Centerpiece on the internet, and sent an email, which was promptly answered. I can see where I will have to travel north in the next couple of weks. My husband just went to Illinois for a few days and brought me home a Cherry Cheeks and a Chicago Petticoats, since I was complaining I need more earlies and lates. I will have to send him off to parts unknown more often, so that he returns bearing DL gifts.

I just recently found this nursery and it boggled my mind. Four acres of daylillies, 750 different varieties. They also carry perennials. Last week I bought four delphiniums from them. I can't believe I just found this place. They have a website. They are very nice people. I bet they would pot some up for you if you ask. You tell them which ones you want and they go out and dig them right then. It is in Gladwin.

Marilyn,
I was up there a few years ago, when Gladwin has their 4th of July festival. They had an air show and many of the Amish were selling bakery items, quilts and baskets. On the way home, I found this nursery, and loved it. It is beautiful and quaint. Their gardens are cottage type. It smelled like chocolate, because they use cocoa bean hulls extensively for their mulch. And they sell a lot of it too. We were planning to go there a few weeks ago. I had wanted to get some daylilies and try some of their other soil amendment products, and didn't want to pay shipping on a bunch of 40# bags. But my MIL just recently moved from Illinois to assisted living near us, and we are finding that we haven't had any real weekends lately that we could roam in. Grayling is about 2 - 2 1/2 hours from here, so it would mean the whole day, if we wanted to really play.

Did you have the opportunity to visit SGC? I had hoped to go there and maybe a couple that notmartha and tapla mentioned. Still could, I suppose; there wouldn't be many daylilies to look at, but as you said, they have a lot of other perennials.

I also had an appt. at Miss Becky's a couple of weeks ago, and then I got sick the night before and had to call to cancel. I found out that EZDaylilies.com is in Dowagiac, but their website doesn't give any indication that they welcome people to their nursery. I didn't email them, so I don't know. So the only place I got to was Ensata's, which was small, but also had Japanese Iris, blooming at the same time as the DL's, so that was interesting.

notmartha - I just realized in rereading that you were issuing an invitation to all of us to see your daylily garden. I would love to do that next summer! Is "Kiah Townsend" yours? It is really beautiful.

So I have been doing some ordering on the Lily Auction. Hemlady, I wish you would sell some of your seedlings and Lighthouse series over there, or do mail order. Any chance?

Judy, I probably am going to just sell on Ebay this year. I am having trouble with my MSN web space. It won't let me access my pics and the Lily Auction requires your pics to be on a web site to be able to post them there. If I can find some other free web space or finally access my space on MSN, I will definitely sell some on Lily Auction. Thanks for asking.

Cindy (Hemlady),

I too would be interested in your offerings on the Lily Auction. Do you go by Hemlady there too?

Do you sell seedlings?

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

I have some listed now on Ebay under lighthousegardens. I have not been able to list on Lily Auction until I can figure out why my free MSN website won't let me access my pics. If I eventually get on Lily Auction my user name is Lighthousegal. I have a good buy on a baker's dozen seedlings right now on ebay. I would rather sell on Lily Auction because their listing fees are not as expensive as ebay.

Stone Cottage Garden in Gladwin is a wonderful place. The owners often do Gardening Conferences for groups such as the Isabella Master Gardener Assoc. AND hold their own workshops on site in their lovely restored barn . When they have their 'Garden Party' (July ?) they have refreshments, an Irish Band; and acres of Daylilies. Walk out into the fields, choose the one you wish to purchase and someone will dig it on the spot for you. Their check out/cash register is usually under a tree in the yard. Plus they have other perennials to purchase and YES, they use cocoa bean hull mulch, yummy ! I believe that they host a plant Swap, check out their web site. Gee, I sound like a commercial, but I sure am glad I found this little Eden.
An added plus is that Gladwin is a pretty little town, a nice place to browse around. Walk thru Ward's, Pamida, and Gladwin Pharmacy sells Burt's Bees products.

Hi Grannymarsh!

Stone Cottage Gardens is about 14 miles south of where I live (just across the Roscommon County line). Just thought I would say hi. I enjoy your pictures that you post on the Iris Forum. I go by the name of Shadow there.
