Rain came at a price

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

This week-end, we had the first good soaking rain since June 1st. We'd had some rain earlier in the month, but the fields had already begun to dry out so the rain was welcomed. The storms this week-end were rather fierce at times. Some of the lightening was frighteningly close. We didn't find out how close until last night. We went out to check on three soon to be first time moms. On the way back to the house, we made a horrible discovery. We found two of our 4 year old Angus cows dead under what was left of a hugh mesquite tree. They must have been under the tree when the lightening struck. It hardly made the 2 inches of rain worth while.

Oh, how sad and horrible! :( I'm sorry! I've never had anything that awful happen, but when we finally got rain here last week the winds were really high and lots of lightening and thunder. I went from one end of the house to other watching and making sure things were ok. I don't know what I would have done, other than cry, if I had seen something damaged.

Veronica, how terrible! I'm so sorry.

How awful...You are right hardly worth the rain.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

that is terribly awful.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Veronica, I am so sorry for your loss. What do you do with those animals now?
Josephine.

Oh, no... I'm so sorry!

I am so sorry.

Veronica, I just can't imagine what that must have been like for you! I'm so sorry, what a sad day on the ranch.

We have been reluctant to go near them right now. I get so attached to them that it's like losing a family member. We will have to move the remains, but not right now. Apparently, by the time we found Joy and Josey dead, they had already been found by local vultures and coyotes.

That grove of trees is a favorite resting place for the herd. Mesquite debris has to cleared out. The tree trunk cut down as some of the remaining pieces are way too pointed.

I may be one of only a few people who like mesquite, but that was a lovely tree, about 15 - 18 inches in diameter. Tall.

I think mesquites are beautiful too so graceful and airie, I am so sad about the cows,
what a shame. valuable animals too, so I am sure it was a financial loss as well.
Josephine.

That is so sad - thank heavens you and your family were not under that tree!

Veronica, It must have been a terrible shock after being so happy about the rain. My sympathy goes out to you. We used to have a couple of dairy cows and loved them as family members. I am also sorry for the loss of the mesquite tree. I love them too. Lightening struck one that was growing about 10 feet from the back of my privacy fence. I have missed it each year that it has been gone.

I'm sad you lost your "pets", your beautiful tree, and your investment in your angus.
That is very sad...

Thank you everyone for your support. It means a lot.

I don't have cows, but I know how it hurts to lose a pet. It's also awful to lose a beautiful tree. The leaves on a mesquite are so beautiful they remind me of lace blowing in the breeze. I hope you can get help on removing the cows. That would be awful to have to do that yourself.
