Could someone please id this?

I was just complaining to someone that you can't find nice, different hoyas where I live. Then low and behold I go to a greenhouse and find a very nice one. I was told it was a pink tipped one. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me the real name?

This Hoya newbie will make a guess........ 'Krimson Queen'. Note I said *newbie* but it does look like mine.

Great....thank you very much Pam. I tried doing a google search on pink tipped and didn't come up with anything. If my mom's hoya that has more cream in the leaves is a Krimson Princess then I guess I have a little family. LOL

Yep you do............... if this Hoya newbie's guess was correct. ;)

The difference between H. carnosa 'Krimson Queen' and H. carnosa 'Krimson Princess' is whether the cream/pink is in the middle of the leaf with green margins or the other way around.....and....I can never remember!!!!

Oh, okay, that's good to know. This is the one that Christine thinks is Krimson Princess so now I know the reason. Thanks for the information.

I have both Krimson Princess and Queen. Yes Pam you're right, Sandy's new hoya is the Krimson Queen - congrats Sandy!!

Thanks Christine. I'm starting to get a collection. It looks like I'm on the slippery slopes of another plant obsession. I can see I'm going to be spending lots of time in the hoya forum. LOL

Sandy

It's a nice place to be Sandy.

By the way, the full, correct name for this beauty is:

H. Carnosa Tricolor "Krimson Queen"

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Oh, thank you even more Christine. LOL So does that mean that the other one is H. Carnosa Tricolor "Krimson Princess"?

Sandy

No, its actually H. Carnosa Rubra "Krimson Princess". Don't ask me why, just one of those weird naming games I guess. But I see more red on the Rubra (which probably means red) than I've ever seen on the Tricolor.

Oh. okay. Thanks Christine. I guess I'll have to go change the name tags. I'm looking forward to them getting a bit of pink colouring as I think they look nice with it.

Christine...how frightfully correct of you, dahling! Jokes aside...the minute we start "nicknaming" hoyas we run into trouble. For instance: you have one called H. aff. fraterna. You also have H. meliflue ssp. fraterna....one day in a catalogue you see H. fraterna for sale and you thing "WOW, now I can get the real thing!!!" Stand by, because you will get either the one of the 'fraternas' you already have (or H. australis). Very important when talking about the REAL names, that the correct wording be used.

OK...lesson over. Anyone heard any good jokes?

Christine and Sandy,
the name should be written as Hoya carnosa 'Rubra' or Hoya carnosa cv. Rubra or Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Princess' or Hoya carnosa cv. Krimson Princess but don't combine the two names or use "" around the cultivar names. Blame Carl Linnaeus on the naming conventions :)

The cv. 'Rubra' name was the one Cobia patented, the 'Krimson Princess' name was the registered trademark name for it in the state of Florida.

So again, the correct name for the one in the first pic is Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' or Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor',
the second one is Hoya carnosa cv. Krimson Princess or Hoya carnosa cv. Rubra.

Thanks Milan. I'm new to the world of hoyas so I appreciate learning the correct names for the ones I have. I'm wondering if one of the names in each case is preferable to the other. In other words, do you go with the one Cobia patented or the registered trademark name for it in the state of Florida? It seems pretty complicated. It's a good thing I know about writing names on tags in pencil so they don't fade in the sun. LOL

So many hoyas .... so much to learn ... sigh... 8-)

Thanks for that clarification Milan. I'll go amend my plant tags accordingly.

Christine
