CLOSED: CLOSED: I have an addiction to Hostas, Irises and Daylilies

Hamilton Sq, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have an addiction to Hostas, Irises and Daylilies. I don't really have any thing to trade. I am willing to pay postage. The list I have is very long, but my yard is very large.

The people that bought the lot behind us finally got rid of the dirt hill that had a ton of poison ivy, oak, sumac and weeds growing in it. That stuff growing in the hill took over all the yards and killed of all the trees and plants that had been around the 4 houses on my corner. Now that it’s gone and the dead trees are down, I want to fill my yard back in.
My want list:

I agree with IndaShade. I have a long list too, but I couldn't expect others to take care of it, especially on expensive dl. I'm saving as I can and hope to have things I can trade out to be fair to other gardeners. We are on a fixed income, but I figure if I want it enough I need to save or trade to get it. I don't expect freebees-but was lucky got Pandoras Box from se_eds for postage, although I tried to send a little more. Hope you get some of what you need, I can't help with a list like that, it's taken several years to get the candies I have coming and they would be starters.

Well said. At first I assumed she was a new subscriber, who hadn't taken the time to get a feel for how trading works here. But she's been at DG a while, although pretty inactive (at least in terms of starting threads). Yes, occasionally people offer extra plants for postage. DGers are a generous lot, and often there are responses to requests for plants for postage, but not for such a long and specific list.

I'd like to suggest that if new traders don't have plants to offer, they might consider whether they have other things they could give. I recently joined a local iris society that has member swaps. Since I'm new to growing irises, I just ordered a bunch of extra garden markers, figuring that I may be able to swap them by 5's or 10's for iris rhizomes if I don't have other plants that a member would like. Even when somebody offers for postage here, I like to see if there isn't something I could send them. To me, trading feels like an exchange of gifts between friends, and I like that.

I've asked several new traders to please read over the Trading Primer. Although it didn't answer all my questions, it gave me a good general idea of the ettiquite here at DG. Skimming through some past threads can also give you a feel for things.

poorgirl5, I'm not trying to make you feel bad or to feel unwelcome here, but I'm not sure you stepped out with your best foot forward this time.

If you're on a budget, as I am, you might check Lowes and Walmart for clearance items. You probably won't get the things you listed above, but you can get some great new plants to fill up space.

A couple days ago, I bought one-gallon perennials at Lowes on clearance for $1 each! I got Sedum Autumn Fire, Spiderwort Pink Chablis, and Chocolate JOe Pye Weed.

Today, at Walmart, I bought one-gallon pots of Hosta Frances Williams (can never get too many of this one!) and Hosta Patriot for 2.27 each. And I've been wanting some Sedum Purple Emperor. Gues what. They had it on clearance for 1.25. I bought the best looking four containers. It's BEATIFUL! And I got some Pink Brandy Guara for 1.25 each. Nice healthy plants cheaper than postage would have cost to have someone send them to me.

Does your Lowes and Walmart clearance things? It's over 100 degrees here, so they're trying to clear out a bunch of stuff. Your stores may not be clearancing just yet, but perhaps in a few more weeks? I check back often so I can get different plants. I can often get spireas, crape myrtles and butterfly bushes for $1 each. I even got some Flowering almonds for $1 each.

Another great place for interesting bargain plants is the Master Gardener's plant sale in your area. Ours is in May. But yours may be at a different time. Your county extension office can probably put you in touch with the master gardener group in your area.

Just some ideas to help you fill up space. And of course plants multiply so one day you'll have some to trade.

Happy gardening.

Great suggestions, NancyAnn!

You might also keep an eye on this forum for folks offering more common or nameless daylilies for postage -- it does happen, since daylilies do spread once they get going!

I'll look forward to trading with you down the road, pg5, once my own daylilies get established!

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

i get THEE BEST plants at lowes for like 50 cents! i once got 5 sago palms for $2 a piece! yea some of them were gonners but 3 lived, what a deal! almost all my yard b4 daves was lowes "table of death" lol

Bay, AR(Zone 7a)

I had never traded any plants until the past year or so and have only been on "another site" about a year and on Dave's for about 2 months. Luckily, I had met and become friends with ButterflyChaser (see post above) and in listening to her talk about trading, knew enough that you don't just ASK for a long list of named stuff for postage. You watch the exchange forum for OFFERS of things for postage and then ask to be included in the "giveaway".... Between that and clearance purchases at local nurseries and such, you build your gardens. And it doesn't happen overnight.

Hamilton Sq, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am not looking to get any freebees. I much rather trade something then pay postage. I will check my Lowes and Walmart clearance items. I am sure I will find something. I will wait to see what others have for trade or postage. Thank you all for your help.

Concord, NH(Zone 5a)

Boy I cant wait for our Lowes to open here if they clearance plants!

Plumieville, PA(Zone 6b)

poorgirl5 you have mail

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

We have a Home Depot here too, but they do NOT clearance plants. I asked about it once and they told me that they can send any dead plants back to the supplier and get their money back. The manage couldn't understand why LOwes doesn't do that too. I informed him that Lowe's knows I come in for the clearance items, and I come in often. But rarely do I leave with just the clearance items. See, since I get such a great bargain on the clearance rack, I can afford a new stauary or a new tree--at regular price. Also, I pick up a few bags of soil while I'm there. So they don't lose money from the clearance items. They score more sales that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

The Home Depot manager wasn't convinced. And Home Depot doesn't see much business from me.

Last week our local Kmart marked their one gallon perennials down to a buck. I got 4 pots of this beautiful low-growing sedum, 4 salvia greggi "Lipstick", 4 holly ferns, and two tiarella "Iron Butterfly" plants. I love the bargains!

Good luck to you, poorgirl5. You sometimes have to go several times a week to catch the clearance items. And my lowes keeps moving the clearance rack--sometimes in the front of the store, sometimes in the back, sometimes in an aisle where they're pulling plants off the shelf. If you don't find one, ask an associate if they do that.

Great comments BC. You're a great help to those getting started with all of your ideas and money saving methods.

Poorgirl: I'm presuming you have it all mapped out just where you want every plant to go - right?

Hamilton Sq, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yes, Pretty much I do, When we started to dig the yard up a few weeks ago we have found the old flower beds the first owner put in. I have beed told she had garden parties all the time and this was once a real show place. We dug up the stepping stones in the yard, They are really big heavy stones. Eveything was covered with dirt when moved in so we didn't know they were even there. I a very large yard and a lot of space to plant.

Celina, TN(Zone 6b)

Hi,
I will have some stella's come spring if you still need them. This is the first year I had them and I know I can spare a few come spring. I also will have a Sammy Russel to spare. I got 4/5 clumps in the secret trade here. So if your still looking give me a holler come spring.
Winnie
