Flowers before leaves???

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi, I planted my first two plumeria cuttings a few months ago and haven't gotten any leaves yet but I do have what appears to be a flower cluster growing out the top, still with no leaves. Is this normal? ~~Linda

I don't know if it's normal or not...but you sure are lucky! Mine are growing leaves like crazy. I'm just grateful for that much....they lived!

Watch'em. How's Florida? Can't say that we've left the heat behind. At least we had great AC. Here we are waiting for a new AC compressor to be installed.

Hi Brad!! Good to hear from you. Florida's hot, but at least you have had rain on your side of the state. None here. Hope you get the A/C fixed SOON. Sounds like melt-down time.

Hi Linda! Flowers often come before or with the leaves when they emerge from dormancy in the spring; however, since you just planted cuttings a few months ago, they are still rooting and don't have roots yet. When you see leaves, then you know that you have some roots.

You can cut off the inflo so that there is more energy toward rooting instead of toward flowering, or it may fall off on its own if there is not enough energy to spare, or you may get a few nice flowers. Some people think cutting off the inflo while the cutting is rooting is the proper thing to do, but I don't know of many people who can or want to do it. I never cut off inflos!

Hi Brad! Hope that A/C gets fixed!

Mine did this too, hoyagirl, and I left the inflo as it were. (Just couldn't *bear* to cut it off!)

A couple of the buds blasted, but I did get two nice blooms!
