I always look at the pets on Petfinder in my area. The man that I got Bindi from had posted some animals that were in a kill shelter. He had some boxer's pictures there. The two were siblings, one boy and one girl. He had a number on the site that he said was the shelter and you could call because he was full.
Well, they were so cute on the pictures, but I have so many already. We always have to make a trip to Petsmart and he was there. He had the two boxers there with him. He said they were going to put them down that day. He said he told them he would take them instead and then he said they decided he would have to pay an adoption fee. Sheesh, the guy is saving their lives and they are taking advantage having already decided to euthanize them.
The male was sitting on the females back. He was cute and so was she. But I knew if I took one of them it would have to be a male since I had too many females already and adding another was asking for trouble. Even though they are spayed females usually, especially boxers, get along better with opposite sex playmates.
To make a long story short I did decide to have a look at the male. When I took him out of the cage the female started pawing at the cage and crying for him to come back. It was so sad. I asked the guy if maybe I should not take him and see if someone would adopt both of them together. He assured me that it was better to just take one as he had agreed to do that with two others and they were still there two years later with him, as no one wanted to adopt them both.
So I did take the male. He was really groggy. I don't know if he sedates them or maybe the shelter did prior to them going to be euthanized. But he was staggering and very sleepy. He is about 5 to eight lbs. underweight and has a skin condition that I am having treated with antibiotics and benedryl for a week before he can be healthy enough to be neutered.
When we first introduced him to the girls he was all eager to breed! He was making a nuisance of himself and I was thinking I made a big mistake.
After several minutes of this the girls sorted it all out and poor Theo as we named him, became the docile hen-pecked male. LOL He is doing wonderfully now and has the most lovable personality I have ever seen. He sounds just like Stormy when he "talks" and "sighs" If I weren't looking at him I would think it was my other boxer.
He has a tail! Not docked at all. It is long and flips over his back like a question mark. The Vet says he is probably full boxer, but he has a different shaped head than Stormy. His is more blocky. Looking at the internet, it looks like he is from a German line which is bulkier.
I had him on the bed today and he was in hog heaven. When we first started bringing him into the house after he did his business he was snooping all over. He even gets along with the cats and ignores the bunnies.
How anyone could not love him much less ignore him to the point of starving him is hard to imagine. He ate like a pig the first two days and then when he figured out there was always going to be food slowed down. I gave him lots of small meals to not shock his system. He was in the pound for a while and I am sure they fed him, so he must have really been skinny when he was first brought in.
I looked at the Petfinder page and his sister is no longer listed, so she also got adopted or maybe Joel decided to keep her. He is the no kill shelter guy.
The good news is he is heartworm negative unlike Bindi who was positive, so I was spared that ordea;. I was so relieved . I also thought he might have mange, but the Vet said it looked like just an infection and didn't need anything but the antibiotics.
Anyway here is his picture. Bindi is in her usual position, right next to me. LOL It doesn't show how skinny he is but there are a few scars and missing hair in the picture to show his skin is messed up. He also has some scars on his nose that look like he tried to crawl out under a wire fence.
I just cannot walk away
