Big visitor at Briarpatch
What a beauty. Anybody know what it is? Becky.
It is the male Black Witch Ascalapha odorata http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/distr/lepid/moths/usa/1562.htm

I'm still waiting to hear from my brother, the expert. Hopefully I'll know tomorrow, unless some of you know?
I recall seeing some like it as a child, but its been a long time, and I doubt I ever learned the name.
Thanks Kennedyh, that's her! Now, if she will just stick around for awhile, I'd love to get to know her better. I'll do some more reading up on her. Sure woulb be neat to have more of them around!
Pardon me - him! They aren't usual to this area, so I guess all the weird weather we've been having has blown this one off track. Thanks again for the links kennedyh. I'll do some follow-up tomorrow.
tgif you need to report it to Mike Quinn with pic for confirmation. I will get back with you with the e-mail addy. I had a female the day after TS Cindy
Here is the thread in which Donna posted her female Black Witch http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/527002/
DonnaB - I'll be happy to report this! I'm going to see if he's still out in the shop, and try to get a few more pics. Do you know if Mike needs anything special, or would this one do for what he needs?
Now if we could just get your female together with this male, maybe we could get something started here in MS!
Hey kennedyh - do you have these?
ginni
No ginni, they are not in Australia, I just knew where to look for them, recognising the family.
Ken
DonnaB - I googled and got Mike's address and sent him a note. Thanks for your interest and information. (I went out and looked around, but didn't see the fellow this am, but apparently, they rarely stick around for more than a day.)
