naien,

I bought these seeds a while back and somewhere along the way I lost them. I would absolutely love some of them if all have not been spoken for. I may have stuff to trade but it might be better if you let me know what you are looking for.

Thanks

kayaker: you have Monotropa uniflora seeds? how do you germinate them? can you reproduce the microrrhizal tubules? if i can grow it i definitely want that, anybody have any live plants to trade instead of just seeds?

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

naien, I sent you email, was I in time *S*

Heya! Those wild irises are just gorgeous! I would love to trade with you...

I'm sure I can find some goodies for you! I have an unknown variety of J. painted fern and could also split a little division from one I think is 'Ursula's Red'. I can also send you a couple of extra rooted SGs. I'm currently trying to layer my Vigna caracalla (snail or corkscrew vine, the scented one), so hope to have rooted cuttings of that as well. I also have a Sweet Autumn Clematis I've been meaning to layer, or I could send unrooted cuttings.

Do you want heirloom tomatoes for the fall growing season in your zone? I could root some branches to send to you.... LMK, and I'll Dmail you a list of the varieties I have.

If you're willing to wait for my end of the trade, I'm thinking the fern in particular would travel better in slightly cooler weather (it's already 94 here today). Also, that would give me time to figure out what other plants you might like from me, to root cuttings, etc. If I don't come up with enough to fill a flat rate box in return, I'll include loose postage to make up the difference. LMK if & how you want to work this trade!

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

naien,

I tried my best to reporduce the optimal conditions for germination but did not have any luck. I have seen live plants before but it is said that if you go and move or touch them they turn black.

The seed tradelist you viewed is not up to date...I can try to put a quick list together for you and send via email.

Just got back from a short tramp in the woods behind my house, I was photographing ferns for someone. I got the pictures however was constantly cornered by comacazii mosquitoes.

BUT!!! I also noticed that Indian pipe is starting to pop up! (see pic)
The indian pipe I dug up last year was already black and past its growing time.
I dug it up hoping it would pop up this year....not so. But this was before I new how precise the conditions for its life cycle was. I may try to dig wide and deep trying not to disturb its "ecosystem". If this works and I have regrowth the following year then I could possible send you some. Right now, though, I'd rather not kill off too much at one time. Even Then It may not last for many years.

INFO:
The Monotropa uniflora contains no chlorophyll and can't carry on photosynthesis, they must derive their metabolic energy in other ways. The indian pipe is a saprophyte just like most fungus, meaning this species lives on and helps to break down dead or decaying plant matter. Then the indian pipe absorbs the nutrients from the matter. The plant roots also have a symbiotic relationship with a particular species of soil fungi (pH dependant) to supplement its diet. This special relationship would make it difficult to grow these outside the natural environment in which they were found.

I would love to send postage.I don't have much to trade right now.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

In case anyone's counting to see if there are some left, I should note that I cancelled my request.

In my enthusiam, I didn't notice at first that these are definitely not hardy in my zone! oops.

We'll still do a trade.... just for something else! :-)

Capistrano Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

that's what i figured, but look how beautiful it is with your curly rush... lucky.

everyone, you can dmail me a list of the stuff you have, my trade list is not restrictive to what i have listed.

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

For those who would like to appreciate the "Indian Pipe". I am hoping to follow these bugger throughout their visit this year.

is that a seed pod? i don't understand... maybe if i used a microrrhizal soil to amend soil between two trees in my backyard in a full-shade area and planted seeds and let it form it's own phosphorus tendrils?

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

I know they count on some chemical in the soil to create the right conditions for growth, didn't know they have such soil available.

I can send you some seeds along with the ferns for experimental purposes.

The final picture in the series is the Indian Pipe after flowering. It stands erect to hold the seeds in. Im hoping to get a pic of them in the various stages of growth.

Capistrano Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Concord, NH(Zone 5a)

Shoot just noticed critters post, not hardy for me either.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Night blooming epis. One has a 12 inch across white flower, one a 3-4" acroo white flower and one with a 1 1/2 across white flower. I also have some asparagus fern, looks like boston fern grows great in the ground, may be a little fox tail fern, Parrot lilly in plant files the one at the bottom w/ green and red bloom, orange crocosmias.

Not sure if I have anything you would like.

Thanks,
Sandy

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I would love some if you have any left. I didn't get a reply about the trade, for fern, but I will be happy to send postage instead if you want. We have another trade for seed going so let me know and I will send the postage with the seeds.

naien,
you have d-mail.

Syracuse, NY(Zone 5a)

Kayaker- What kind of tree is the indian pipe growing under? The indian pipe is not a fungus itself, but is able to form a... actually I believe it's a parasitic.. relationship with mycorrhizal fungus already attached to a host tree (that one's a symbiotic relationship, the tree gives the fungus sugars and the fungus passes nutrients to the tree). If you dig down far enough you should find the pipe attached to tree roots I think.. or looking like it is.. You might have luck trying to germinate it in other spots under the host tree by digging it into the soil.. I think it has to be in physical contact with that tree's roots (or the mycorrhizae filaments around the roots) to germinate and grow.. This is from a lecture I went to on these plants a few years ago so my memory's a bit hazy. Great treat to have in your garden either way.

Sorry this post doesn't have anything to do with you lilies naien ;).

Just found an article that seems to talk about the relationship. Looks like I forgot a step somewhere in there, here it is. http://www.tompelletier.com/Curious%20Nature/Indian%20Pipe/indian_pipe_1.htm
