Roz, it is a heliconia..don't know which one though. Is yours in the ground? If so, did it over winter in the ground? Thanks..

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Wow Roz, your flowers are so pretty!

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Lisa, they did overwinter; was sorta late coming back. I think it was because it was really cool here this spring. Stayed in the 50's at night until the end of May.

Thanks, Suzie. Are you getting ready for a storm?

Knoxville, TN

What a sweet bloom, Roz. Thanks for sharing the photo!

awsome....

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Looks like heliconia andromeda

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Yep Roz, a big one is heading our way. Got the hatches battened down, the beer in the fridge and the dogs in the house!(and I didn't forget to drain down the pool, now if it doesn't rain, my water bill will be horrible)

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

lost all mine or maybe I threw them out to quick. Left them out in a sheltered area over winter in a huge pot. Was told they don't come back

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Donna, I lost mine too. I think I kept them too damp.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

how are you suz? bad weather yet?

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Suzie, why on earth did you drain the pool? We alwyays add extra chemicals to ours before a hurricane - power will be off, and you will not be able to run the filter, but for three or four days, you have a bath! We have used ours many times after a hurricane. Usually, our power is back on after about three or four days at the most, except with Camille. It gets mighty hot, with no air conditioning, so we sat in the pool! Also, you can use the pool water to flush your toilets. We took a bucket full and put in each bathroom.

Girl, I have got to give you a primer in Hurricane 101!! Sounds like you did pretty good, though - beer in the fridge, animals in the house. I am sure hoping all is okay for all of you. Take care, and hang on!!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Roz, we didn't empty it, we just drained it down 6 inches. They kept saying we would get 6-10 inches of rain and that people should drain their pools down if there was a chance it would overflow and run in the house!
I think I do need that primer! I didn't buy enough beer!

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

You still have power, I guess cause you are using the puter, so go turn up your fridge and freezer high as it will go, Dump ice in plastic bags and stack it around your freezer stuff and if your power goes off, don't open the freezer at all. The ice will help keep it cold. Course if you lose power more than a few days, it will thaw anyway. Just cook it up on the gas grill!!

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Suzie, I sure hope you are all okay; just heard the hurricane went in below you. You are in the quadrant that gets tornadoes and lots of rain. I guess flooding is really going to be a problem for you. Flood waters do lots and lots of damage, and costs lives, be very careful.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I just tried to call Suzie, phone lines must be down; they are probably getting it pretty rough right now. Please say a prayer for her and her family.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

We're back up Roz, got the generator going full blast so I can get online. The phone lines are working, as soon as I get off line, I'll give you a call.
The eye has hit land, they say 2 or 3 more hours and it will be over.
The generator has enough wattage to run the computer, the TV and receiver, the freezer, and a few lights and fans. We don't have the plug that attaches it to our breaker box, so we can't run the A/C unfortunately!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

so glad everything is alright Susie. Is this your first hurricane?? We also clean/bleach the bath tubs and washing machine and fill with water. Just put a little bleach in it to keep it fresh. Like 3 drops per gal.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Donna, our water is still working, but we bought those big 5 gallon drinking water jugs just in case.
This is my first hurricane here, was in a bad one in Florida in '86. I will never forget how much rain fell in that one! It was terrible!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

awesome plant!!!

the 5 gal cans Larry?? We have them 2. We have a hard sided one and a plastic collaspable one. In Wal-Mart with the camping supplies. We also fill the boat up with gas (100 gal) and take 2, 5 gal cans too just in case.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Went to Home Depot yesterday and they had the false bird of paradise(heliconia) for $7.00. Of course, I had to have one after seeing your picture. I have had it a couple of times before. This time I am going to put it in part shade under a palm tree facing south. Where do you have yours Roz, sun, shade, south, north, east or facing west???
Janet

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Actually, Janet, mine is in part shade under a palm tree facing south. I swear it really is. Muched heavily, watered often, and talked to daily.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Cool, my plans EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!
