Waiting on Emily to hit

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

The winds are starting, they're evacuating a few areas, Bayview is still voluntary evacuation.Last news report I saw said Emily had dropped 2 milibars pressure and was gaining strength.
We have food, water, gas for generator, all movable stuff is inside or tied down, dogs and cats are inside, we drained the pool down about a foot.........I hope they've opened the floodgates on the resaca!
We're 4 miles from the Bay, above the flood zone.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Where is Bayview?

Down by Brownsville and Port Isabelle. Check out http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=BAyview%2C+TX

I'm prayingfor y'all, Susie.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Susie, take care! I'm praying for you too.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Still here, lol. The rains have started, it's coming down in sheets and the wind has picked up.
My friend from the Island was supposed to come with their motor home, they haven't gotten here yet. I know they made it off the island before they closed the bridge to big vehicles, but don't know where they are now.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We're definitely praying for you, too, Calalily!

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

I have been thinking about you for the last few days, hoping that Emily will be kind to you and your neighbors.

I was happy to see this post. I will keep you in my thoughts.

Kris

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Well, it's calm again so I got online. Our power blinked out for a minute or two, but so far, it's holding on.
I learned one important thing when preparing for a hurricane.......when you board up the windows and doors and put sand bags in front of the only door not covered and when you fill your garage with flower pots and patio stuff and garbage cans and anything that can fly thru the air..........it's real hard to get back in the house!

Sure hope you all survive this fine. Thinking about you.

Calalily,

Your in my thoughts and prayers...Stay Safe...

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Susie, It sounds like you are as prepared as anyone can be. We'll be thinking about you and praying that Emily doesn't create much damage in your area.

Stay safe! Nat

We've been experiencing gusty winds and heavy rains from Emily's weatherbands since 11:00 this morning.

Personally, I'm very grateful for the rain as my foundation plants started severely dying back about 10 days ago due to the brutal heat and drought.

Although, having been a farmer at one time, I feel bad for the farmers in the middle of harvest. Been there, done that, know the devastation well.

Please keep us updated on how y'all are doing, Susie.

Continuing my prayers,

Donna

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Suzi,

You've been in my thoughts since hearing where Emily might make landfall. I pray that come through this without too much damage.

Veronica

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Donna, I was wondering about you, the radar looks like you're getting quite a bit of rain and wind, with more to come! Take care of yourselves.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

all you deep south texans be safe

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

Hi Susie and Donna,
I have everything ready or as ready as my hubby could things done after he got off of work its raining and windy here.I hope I dont have to go to the hospital again in this , I had a TIA(mini stroke) Sunday night
stay safe
Elva

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Elva, I hope you have a safe night. Donna, I saw on the weather channel where you were getting hit pretty hard. The poor farmers down here had just sprayed their cotton with defoliant, it was white, ready to harvest. The sorghum(milo) they just harvested and watermelons are pretty much picked.

We've had a bit of a break, but that's getting ready to end. There is a rather large storm with tall cells that I've been watching for the last couple hours headed our way.

How are things in Bayview? Looks like y'all went through a really bad cell about an hour ago.

Lots of wind, some thunder, not much rain yet. So far, so good, lol. I don't think I'll get much sleep tonight.
I was supposed to be working at home today, but did I get any work done??? Not a bit, I can't quit going out on the patio to look at the sky!

Funny, I was just thinking about how tired I was going to be tomorrow from staying up tonight. (The weather service is predicting possible tornado and hail activity here tonight and tomorrow.)

Glad to hear the rain there has been to low so far.

How fast would say the winds are, sustained and gusts?

The sky here has suddenly taken on a sickenly yellow cast. (This photo faces ENE.) Yellow skies here tend to be a herald of hail...

Oh, that doesn't look good Donna. Did you get hail?
They are saying now that landfall will be tomorrow morning around 7 am. It's still relatively quiet here, some wind and rain, but not bad. Maybe she will fizzle out before she gets here!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Yikes, I spoke too soon! The winds are here, our power is off and on. We have a generator, not sure if I will have the computer on though.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

We have been running a thread on Hurricane Emily over on the Weather Forum. Sorry we missed this.....we try to keep track of DG'ers in harms way. Hope you made it safely through the night...prayers are with you. Will keep checking back until you get back online.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Hope you guys are doing well!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

It made landfall about 30 minutes ago. Lots of wind, a little rain. Our power went off, but came back on and is still holding. Looks like one big nana is on the ground, haven't gone all the way around the house to check, the wind is too strong to stay out long.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I hope the weather improves for you soon. You have already had a bad winter and now hurricane season, whew! I hope this passes through without doing much damage and the tornadoes stay out of your area. I pray that the next hurricanes don't head toward the Texas coastline.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

They just said on the radio that there were tornados in Alice.. I hope you're ok, Donna!!!

On a lighter note, here is a neat picture of Hurricane Emily from the Space Station: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/07/0720_050720_emilymoon.html

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

2 tornados touched down in Premont which is 28 miles south of Alice

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

How are you and your family doing, emh48?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I hope everyone is safe. There were lots of tornados in surrounding counties, the weatherman said they were "water tornados" and were hard to spot till they were right on you.
It's over here, except for some wind. Now the clean-up begins.

Susie, I'm so glad you're all safe. Hope there isn't too much damage.

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

We are safe .Thank God ! We didnt even get much rain...
Hope we get some tonight...
The tornados hit west of us torn a roof of a house and torn up some trees. In Alice ( 9 miles north of there) it hit a tralior park and there isnt much left there at least thats what the news on tv said and they showed pictures of what little was left of the trialor homes

Glad you made it thru the storm. I arrived in weslaco for my monthly run there and left a day early on Tuesday morning. It normally takes me about 8 1/2 to 9 hours to get there. Since I was in a new truck I figured I had better high-tail it out of there. When I left channel five was saying that the Valley might get 11 inches of rain. Thank goodness you didn't.
jameso

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Jameso, Hidalgo county got more rain than we did, probably 6 inches or more. I think it was Pharr or Donna that flooded.

Well, Emily turned out to be very gentle with us. I put a rain guage out shortly after the rains started and got around a 1/2" accumulation for the entire 3 days, with the winds never getting more than 30+ mph in gusts.

Today there is a strong, steady breeze and the sky is clouding up periodically, but it appears our 2 yr old granddaughter's namesake was only playing with us - thankfully.

I'm grateful to hear, Elva and Susie, that all is okay with y'all, as well.

I have to tell everyone, as Emily got close to land I could see her visually shrinking in size and all I could think was that all of you out there had to be praying for all of us and I will continue to believe that until the Lord tells me otherwise.

So, to each of you that held us in your prayers, Thank you.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I was praying too, believe me. But reading this thread reminds me of growing up in Bellaire (SW Houston). I have memories of many hurricanes, but they've all blended into one general blur. The only thing that really stands out in my mind is my childlike lack of fear when a hurricane was expected. I don't ever remember my parents ever showing any fear of the hurricane itself. I do remember my mother wringing her hands because all the kids in the neighborhood would go out in the flooded street and play. I remember the water was sometimes pretty fast and had lots of floaters (most unidentified) and I would pretend that we lived on a river. I remember one year the water rose to within about 12 feet of the house.
