Variegated Brugs....why can't I grow 'em?!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I tried another cutting (2, actually) of a variegated Brugmansia this past winter.

Finally got one to root with a willow branch in the jar of water(1 turned to mush) and had it struggling along indoors, where it contracted spider mites, of course!

It's been outdoors since May....it would begin to grow a leaf or two, they'd fall off....and so on.
All the other Brugs have thrived and are doing very well.

Why am I never successful with these variegates? (This is at least my thrid try!) Is there a 'secret'? If so, pray tell, lol!!

Do you all treat them the same as your other Brugs?

I'm wondering if it was too wet, too dry, too hot, too much sun....
It was in full sun after being acclimated from indoor conditions, just like the other brugs, and I watered it the same as the others....maybe even a little less, as it's soil felt moist since it had no leaves to speak of..... ???

Actually....I'm just plain 'stumped'!

Has anyone else had trouble with these?

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

Peaches is hardest for me to root. Some of the others do better in a different medium. Maya usually roots pretty readily in whatever, Axelrose prefers sand or light soil to water, Miners claim finally put on a few roots in light soil but hated sand, jamie is doing well in sand, and I never tried snowbank, So try them in something else, Maya being easiest (for me) and see if it makes a difference. Direct sunlight drys out the tops, which do well to be misted a couple times a day till they take hold. And as they root and grow leaves, I take off the larger ones to encourage the growth to go to roots.

My experience only, but it counts too ;)

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Have you tried Maya? She's a doll and so easy...

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Thanks lagata2...good to hear of someone else's experiences.

Unfortunately I don't know the ID of my cutting, but I *think* it might have been Snowbank.

The thing is, I did get the little stinker to root, and it even grew leaves, indoors.

Then, in late May, I moved it out to my sunny porch (but in a shaded spot) where it lost a few leaves, then began to sprout a few more, lost them....and so on.

When the weather turned good and warm/ day and night I placed it outdoors, where it did the same thing. I noticed about 2 weeks ago that it was shrivelling at the top (where originally cut) (which happens, I've noticed) but it was sprouting new leaves near the base......just checked the other day and it's kaputi.....I'm thinking that maybe it did receive too much sun *and* too much water, as we did have quite a rainy spell. Funny thing is, the other Brugs did just fine through that rainy spell.

I don't know....I'm about to give up on the variegates!

Sherrylike....since I'm unsure of the ID of my cuttings, I don't know if I've tried Maya or not, lol!!

I'll keep that in mind, though, and maybe try that one next....thanks for the advice!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I've been checking out photos of Maya and I don't think that's the one I had.

So.....I've been searching for a 'Maya' for sale, and although I was hoping to find cuttings, I did find a plant....18-24" multi-stemmed for $29.49....(includes shipping).....is that reasonable, anyone know?
Sounds as though it likely is reasonable, since that's the only one I found, lol!

Do any of you know of a source from which to purchase *cuttings* of Maya?
(Probably the wrong time of year, right?)

TIA

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You won't be able to get a cutting to bloom this summer, so I would wait until fall and get one for postage. I'm sure there are lots of people here who will be cutting back and will share with you. In our cold climate.....even tho it doesn't feel very cold right now, the expensive one might not have time to bloom this year. It would be nice to see a picture before buying.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

You're probably right, Brugie....I should wait....but you know, that's hard to do! (lol!) I thank you for the advice.

If anyone is willing to part with a Maya cutting in the fall and willing to put me on their 'list', I'd be happy to reciprocate in whatever way (within reason, of course!).

It's the only one I'm really looking for.

Also, if anyone can come up with a source from which to purchase a reasonably priced cutting now, I'd be happy to hear about it.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Nan, go to ebay and check out the auctions..I found a peaches and cream this summer and it was very reasonable..it was a 2 foot plant too...Judy

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Nan I feel like a road trip.
This one's ready to go. The original little stick was sold to me as 'Peaches and Cream' fromValleygrow last Nov. I've posted several pics of it. Since the Maya I've grown out from Kell has been blooming, I haven't been able to tell the difference.

This is my second Maya from Kell for that field test we're doing.
It's loaded with a bunch of buds that are just about to open.
If I can protect it in the back of the truck, I'll bring this one up to you as well.

PLMK and check you email for a phone#.

she'll be able to send cuttings out herself if she wants this potted thing. :)

Mc Call Creek, MS

Oh, okay, Blaine. I thought the one you were taking was Peaches and Cream.

Kay

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Thats the little one. The 2nd pic about to bloom is Maya.
Haven't heard anything back from her. Oh well.
I'm still up for a little road trip and am in the generous mode.

Any takers out there within 200 miles or so of Zion? I've even got a Milk and Honey and a couple others ready to go.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Wow...lots of action on this post in a short time!

I don't get online at night or on weekends and never 'til later in the AM.....hence my 'silence'! lol!

Well, thanks juttz, Gaylams & Blaine!

That's very kind and generous of you, Blaine....a road trip....seriously?
Dang...I'd best get home early and start cleaning....it's been a rough couple of weeks!

I'm emailing you, Blaine.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

okey doke and don't be cleaning! I wouldn't be coming to see the house anyway. :)

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

You're very geneous with the Dave's group Blaine. Come February when you're frozen and have an urge to thraw out for a couple weeks, call me here in San Diego. Not Casa Grande, but we always have a little guest room.

So sweet Mary! A couch is heaven for me considering the number of times I've slept in the back of the truck, on a pool table or myriad other places in the wild Navy years. :) I just happen to have an old buddy in San Diego I haven't seen since '81 in the Philippines. I just may take you up on it.
thank you

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Aw shucks, I live too darn far from anybody... except maybe cc, lol
You guys are too nice, though. Love it.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Isn't this great! I'm really just........... dumbfounded!

I'm gonna meet my first DG'er!!

Hoping Blaine will stay for pizza....and...um....*should* I buy some Buds/Suds? If so, let me know your preference, Blaine!

We usually just have soda but I'm sure the DH could go for a 'cold one', lol!!

I agree, how kind of you, Mary....hope you folks do get to meet one of these days!

Hoping, too, Blaine, that you'll bring your good advice....I've grown Brugs since '99, but have had terrible luck with the variegates!

I'm so afraid I'll fail!!!!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

The pleasure is mine.. especially since you've been at it since '99! I just learned how to spell brug 10 months ago. :)

Did somebody say Cold One(s)? Yep - I'll be there with bells on.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

You humble me, really!

Well, I've grown them since '99...but lost a lot of them when my son was ill...so am down to just a couple of big 'uns, and otherwise most of mine are about as old/young as yours!

Maybe, though, I will have a Brug or two you'd like a cutting of...we'll see!

Hey, Blaine...did you get that 'goosechase' (lol!) email I sent?

Anybody else have a maya cutting to share?? I was one of the people who received two cuttings this spring, but they were very small and didn't make it. I ususally am half way decent in rooting them and I'd LOVE to try again - pleaseeeeeeee..(humbly down on my knees)

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Wheww! I didn't realize that potted Maya had gotten that big until I went to put it in the truck.

It's probably illegal and a sin to treat a brug like that but she's definitely in a slice of heaven now. The first time I've been in the heart of WI and in Nan's valley it is an amazing, amazing place.

Don't fret sarv, there'll be plenty to go around soon.
(hmmm, sarv's only 4 hours the other direction? maybe another road trip? Ehhhh, it involves going through Chicago Accckkk!!)

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Well Blaine, you come up through Michigan stop here in Muskegon and unload here too...lolol....Judy

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Sounds like a twofer! Wonder what I'm doing tomorrow.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Take the ferry over and your right at my doorstep....brugs will travel....Judy

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

8ft- I'll drive over to juttz - that way it will be only one stop for ya!!! I'm busy on Monday, but am free the rest of the week LOL

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Blaine, you're the best, isn't he just the sweetest most kind man ??? What a great friend we all have in Blaine. :-)))

Sarv48, I was one trailing Maya too but mine was also a tiny piece that didn't survive...it was even in the bubbler too. Saddened me and it was embarrassing lol...especially now when I see Blaine's is growing out of control up there LOL I wouldn't mind givin' her another try one day but if I did it would be a bigger piece as to have half a chance with me cos' I just couldn't murder another one, it's disheartening!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

A small tip cutting from an actively growing ( not entering dormancy ) brugmansia

is special if one has the experience to root them. They are loaded with meristemic (growth) cells.

~ QUOTE ~ abutilon aka Alice Karchesky who is a top hybridizer of brugs, cannas and more .......

""Rooted tip cuttings bloom the fastest.
I have had some of those bloom while rooting.
Some just a few inches tall ..and a big bloom!
Often those cuttings once rooted bloom before a Y, too. ""

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I'm cutting a trunk off of my remaining Maya today, Slice dice and start rooting both logs and bubblers. Get some rooted before they start thinking about taking a nap. :)
stay tuned

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Good move Blain

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Blaine, don't forget to post pics along the way, I love seeing all of your plants, they just love your green thumb!

Hugs
Julie

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

lol!
Maya did suffer a little 'wind abuse' along the way...but she's not much worse for the wear! Still amazingly beautiful in my eyes!

I cut of the worst leaves, and she bloomed Saturday night!! Can you believe it! I took a few photos and will try to post sometime soon.

Some of the flowers had brownish edges from the wind, but still beautiful and heavenly scented!

Yes, Blaine is quite a guy! (Thanks again, friend!)
The whole family really enjoyed meeting you and hope you'll come back soon.
The SW WI terrain is quite beautiful that time of year.

Sarv48....we'll see how things work out with your other offers, and if they don't work out by any chance, I'll be happy to 'share the love', too!
The plant is blooming right now, so I *have* to at least wait until she finishes. (I'm sure you can relate!)

Gosh....I can't seem to quite thanking you, Blaine, for the Maya, P&C and the other two (you'll have to Dmail me and remind me what those are....I already have forgotten, lol!)....so hope you don't get tired of hearing it!

Isn't it amazing, folks, how Blaine grew those cuttings into these beautiful specimens!
They put my other plants to shame, for sure!

Off to work I go....walkin' on sunshine, thanks to you, Blaine!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Hah! I think I got the better end of that deal Nan and you know I'm just looking for an excuse to come back up there. :) Had a great time shootin' the breeze with Jim too! A little earlier with a little more time and I'm thinking we'd probably raise some stock prices for that beverage company in Golden CO. :)

Nothing in bubblers but 8 potted and under a dirty aquarium. 2 more in the shade of the big PC. I'll have Mayas ready before long so Nan, if you have the room to overwinter that one, just keep it intact and you'll have a great start for next year. Don't throw out the pots if you change them.
