REpotting question

Dundas,, ON(Zone 5b)

Hello again.

I'm trying to grow a Madagascar Jewel, and it's about 5 inches high now, with lots of leaves.

I think I should repot it because the only thing I had available to put it in when I was gifted with the sprout was a plant dish that was more made for bonsai or the like. Quite large around, but only 3 or 4 inches deep.

I know I've read that you shouldn't pot anything in too large steps, so what I'd like to know is, now that it's been started in a large diameter pot, does that need to stay the same, or can I repot it in a deeper pot, but not quite so large around?

TIA for any advice.

Hi there cybercrone. If I were you I'd do as you've thought to do - put it in a deeper, but not as round pot. Its unlikely that your plant, although very leafy, has filled the diameter of thepot with roots. Take it out of the pot its in now and examine the roots. Does a lot of dirt fall off, so that you're left with a root ball or system that is smaller in diameter than the pot? That should be the approximate width of the pot you replant into. If the roots have filled the shallow pot, it probably won't suffer any differently for the transplanting, as long as you're careful not to damage the roots as you change their shape for the new deeper, narrower pot. Hope that helps.
