Kyle, does your plant ever bloom? I love the foilage on my but it never blooms.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Barb, I don't ever remember seeing blooms on it.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

I have never seen that costus. I have the variegated costus specious, and the costus amazonicus, but have never seen that one before. Where did you find it??????

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I don't know if it is the same one but I have one I got in the fall. It arrived all broken to pieces. Tried to root cuttings but not one made it. It is looking pretty good so far now that it is in the ground. Janet you are welcome to a cutting/division in the fall if you want to try it

Sue I got mine from ButterflybyRobyn on e-bay. She is a member here. It really didn't ship well, it was just to big and the PO wasn't gentle with it at all.

Donna that is is the same as mine,

Janet, we have had this one at work for years, I think it came from Stokes in the begining

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Eclipse and Donna,
I have the costus specious(spelling???)
Anyway, my leaves are fuzzy underneath and it has a red stem. Is either of yours like this?????
Eclipse, yours looks a little different to me, possibly darker leaves.
Thanks for the offer Donna. You are always so quick to offer plants for trade. It is very thoughtful of you.
Janet

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

mine has red stem Janet but don't know if the leaves are fuzzy

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Mine has no red and the leaves are smooth. ??((SHRUGS))

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

LOL go figure.. :-)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, they are all so cool. At some point, I have to realize I can't have everything I see.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

PD Donna, what is the with the striped leaf behind the costus? It all looks so nice.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

that is a Hidden Ginger(Curcuma)spelling but don't know which one

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

donnab, the curucma behdind the costus looks like it could be c.zedoaria..

about the costus:
there are two variegated costus that look a lot a like. One is the costus speciosus, variegated. It is the one that has the hairy leaves on the underside.

The other is the costus amazonicus variegated. This one has a waxy leaf. It grows shorter than the c. speciosus.

hope this helps!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

they're all beautiful!!!!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I must have amazonicus then.. :-)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kyle and Donna, they are both beautiful plants.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Eclipse,
I think yours is not amazonicus, as that one is rather low growing. I had it last year, ubt it didn't make the winter. I think you have another variety. IMHO

Long Beach, MS(Zone 8b)

Beautiful DonnaB

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Mine has fuzzy leaves on the undersides and only the spiral stem is all red. The main stalk has some red at the joints but is mainly green

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Mine has NO fuzzy leaves and grows about 20 inches tall. no red on the stems either. I don't care which it is..I love the color. :-)

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Yes, yours is beautiful. Think I have found another variegated costus ginger I "have" to have!!
